To have better stability and the bugs in Unity and Gnome Shell ironed out failing that a Gnome 3.0 powered "Gnome 2.0 look a like UI" has its default.
I would suggest Bodhi Linux (Ubuntu based) It uses a minimal install and Enlightenment as a User interface, I personally am very impressed by it.
