    Re: UK Users - e-petition

I understand your sentiments completely. I worked in the Civil Service for 20 years, and was a representative, building to a senior official in the PCS (and it's predecessors) for 18 of those years....

    UK Users - e-petition

We all know that the UK Government has dallied over using Linux for government business, but they appear to stall regularly and only ever include a small subset of functions in their considerations....

    [other] get_iplayer wrapper

I'm struggling to find somewhere to submit this. Sourceforge contact links take me nowhere, and the project may be dead.

Anyhoo, I've made some modifications to the get_iplayer wrapper that adds a...
  5. [ubuntu] Re: xbmc crashes sometimes when I hit 'exit' and it also can't connect to the interne

I'm late with this, but if you haven't fixed the crash on exit yet, go to settings, video and disable sync video to display. It should exit cleanly then.

Anyone still struggling getting this cam working with skype, I just managed it after a week of hacks, cludges and hair tearing failed to solve the problem.

Re: Ubuntu 10.04 - why the UI change?

Not to mention that the majority of people are right handed, so the right is more natural.

Having said that, it's so easy to change, so I still don't understand the fuss.

    Uncharacteristic

Am I the only one who thinks that, despite the improvements, 10.04 is uncharacteristically buggy. Usually, most bugs have been squashed by the time final is released, but I keep stumbling across them...

[ubuntu] Re: If this is somewhere else - I can't find it

It does, in actual fact, support 1920 x 1200 (which I can confirm from Windows), but whether it's 1200 or 1080 is not the issue, but rather can I have dual display with different resolutions?

[ubuntu] If this is somewhere else - I can't find it

I bought a new 1080p TV last week - max resolution 1920 x 1200. My desktop monitor supports 1650 x 1080. I'd like a dual desktop with the TV - at max native resolution on each, but can't for the life...

    [ubuntu] DVB channel changing VLC

    Hi all,

After trying various solutions to get my DVB-T card working (Hauppauge 1300), I finally got it going in VLC (me-TV, mPlayer and Totem all failed miserably, and MythTV is too much program...

[ubuntu] Re: First hard disk is not visible during install

I had this exact problem, and whilst I'm not saying it's the definitive reason, I've been able to reproduce it.

In my case, it turns out that a hard drive was failing (I have 3 HD's, one for...
  14. [ubuntu] Re: Clean install of 9.10 to new disk won't boot

Try disconnecting the new drive, boot from the live CD and repair grub on the old drive.

Edit: Alternatively, if you installed the new Grub on the new drive, leaving the old drive untouched,...
  15. [ubuntu] Re: Clean install of 9.10 to new disk won't boot

No - I understood. My point was, the failing drive in my system was nothing to do with the Ubuntu install. It was an NTFS formatted, non-bootable drive. Nothing more than storage, and on a clean...
  16. [ubuntu] Re: Clean install of 9.10 to new disk won't boot

I had exactly the same problem, and if yours is the same, you've hit the nail on the head with bad sectors.

I tried to install on 29th which failed, and again last night. When I booted the live CD...

[ubuntu] Re: First hard disk is not visible during install

Me to - except in my case only one drive out of three is vsible to the installer (drives 1 and 3 are missing). 9.04 sees all the drives just fine. I've already tried most workarounds that others have...

[ubuntu] gdm is only half alive

    Hi guys

As much as I'm hoping Ubuntu will eventually replace win - the very fact that it is so configurable is still killing me.

I was quite happy with a gnome desktop and gdm, but I had to...
