Oops, sorry. It's the Meta package I have installed, not the dummy package.
I've recently updated from Karmic to Lucid, with no problems. I previously had WINE installed, principally to run Spotify. In Ubuntu Software Centre, I selected WINE Microsoft Windows Compatability...
Well, since I've not had any response, I'll be brave and assume that there will be no problems.
Wish me luck...... :p
After putting it off for too long, I'm goig for the update from 9.10 to 10.o4 lts. Before I do it, are there any files it would be wise to copy? All personally generated files are on the removable...
Well, I followed the instructions in the thread you linked to and it, after a few false starts, it worked and I'm back and working. Seems it was a kernel problem, though why it should have happened...
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll follow it up this evening and see if it resolves the problem.
Still haven't managed to resolve this so ANY help would be gratefully received.
Just had a thought. Tried rebooting in alternative mode (where you see the boot code). The booting sequence always stops at the same place.
I took a photo of the screen (attached) which shows...
I have an oldish dual boot desktop PC (eMachines P4, 256kRAM), with Windows XP and Karmic Koala. It's always (mostly) worked fine.
On Tuesday night, it was working fine when I closed down. On...
I've had a look under wine and, yes, a number of things I tried and gave up on were still installed. Deleting them doubled the available disk space. I have used bleachbit but not for a while, and...
I also have this problem. Running the same command (but with 30 lines) gave me this listing:
jim@jim-desktop:~$ sudo du -a -x / | sort -n -r | head -n 30
du: cannot access `/home/jim/.gvfs':...
Your warning is well-made and others should take note. The problem is that it's nigh on impossible to find these things out without going through what I did. Nothing I could find suggested I might...
This worked! Although, from what I could read of the code that went past on the screen, it was installing other things as well, as I've re-installed Evolution - so it may be that I've inadvertently...
Many thanks for these suggestions. I'll give them a go and report back.
To make more room on the drive, I decided to remove evolution, which I don't use. I searched for Evolution in Synaptic and marked each installed part for "removal" (but not "complete removal") in . ...
I posted the problem I have with Evolution in an existing thread on this topic. However, as it was a solved thread in the beginners forum, I worry that it's not being looked at.
If anyone can...
Bump - assuming that's allowed.
Anyone able to help?
I too have this problem. However, I can't figure out, as a relative novice, which bits of the text suggested on the blog site were terminal commands and how they should be written.

Following this, I too used bleachbit to get lots of freed space - but not as much as I expected.
When I ran the software, it promised me about 1.4gb of freed space. I got a little over 540mb...
It worked! I'm now writing this on my PC, restored to its natural condition, but with 9.10. Normally, I don't think I'd like that shade of brown but I am pleased to see it! :p
My grateful thanks...
Thanks for this. I think the two installs might be from when I first tried out ubuntu. I didn't really know what I was doing... no change there, perhaps.
I'll try to figure out which is the...
Used this command in terminal and got the following:
sudo ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 82.3 GB, 82348277760 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 10011 cylinders
Units =...
Thanks for this - and the next email with the instructions. Can I check some things before I start?
1. What effect this will have on things like email files? I use Thunderbird and other members...
I had - and hope I still have - a dual-boot PC, with Windows XP and Ubuntu 9.04. Having been getting "your distribution is no longer supported" messages, I carried out an upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10,...
