    Compiz takes 8% CPU usage ALL THE TIME. sometimes it jumps to 12% and reverts back to 8%.

    impossible to get our thoughts into this without knowing which release you're talking about. I myself am in 10.04 and therefor can't use 3.2 kernel, which is probably what you upgraded.
