I had the same issues and solved by booting from USB. I agree with the poster above that it sounds like a SATA drive / controller issues as my box has SATA optical drives.

I have similar issues with a mythbuntu install. wifi drops after a day or so. Doing nothing but using the tv front end and using the wifi to check the tv schedules. So far have not found a solution....
Some interesting ideas there Canada Lee. I am having a problem with my wifi dropping and a networkmanager restart doesn't fix it. The only solution so far has been a reboot.
