    Boot up using your live CD and choose try ubuntu. Once you come up to the home screen you should see a number of icons down the left hand side of the screen....

    I ditched Windows about three years ago now. Ubuntu will do everything you want, I now don't even use Wine for my needs.

    For your mkv files they will play using vlc.
