    a regular cron job was creating significant errors and emailing them. Output is now suppressed and the problem has gone away

    hmm,

    looking at the files in the /var/spool/mqueue they are all local - not spam.

    'MOperating system error' - being spewed out about 30 a minute.

    time for more investigating

    sadly OO doesnt have classic gnome so it's choice time. When I rebuild my 11yo boys laptop recently I switched him to gnome2 on Mint11 - he's very happy. My 10yo however likes unity. go figure.

    Still trying to sort it out. Wife says the pidgin solution isn't as pretty so I added the gwibber ppa and upgraded to the latest version and the problem still exist so I suspect they problem lies...
