a regular cron job was creating significant errors and emailing them. Output is now suppressed and the problem has gone away

looking at the files in the /var/spool/mqueue they are all local - not spam.
'MOperating system error' - being spewed out about 30 a minute.
time for more investigating
I've noticed a lot of disk thrashing recently that I never had so a check of the forums suggested iotop would identify the the culprit -

sadly OO doesnt have classic gnome so it's choice time. When I rebuild my 11yo boys laptop recently I switched him to gnome2 on Mint11 - he's very happy. My 10yo however likes unity. go figure.

OK, I installed a twitter plugin for pidgin (Dont like empathy) and I'm back up and running, but if anyone can suggest a workaround to get gwibber working I'd prefer that solution
