    Re: broke apt-update

Wine used to have that ability by default, but it got taken out for reasons that are unclear. The solution is to copy some desktop files from an examples directory to an applications directory and...
  2. Re: Impossible to fsck sda2 because always mounted

You haven't said what your error messages were, so there's no way to even guess. Having fsck messages during the boot process isn't necessarily related, since fsck gets run automatically every n...
  3. [ubuntu] Re: No video on HDMI samsung FullHD - HDMI-A-1: EDID is invalid

Loading the firmware wasn't enabled by default until recently, which might explain the difference with older versions. You should be able to try turning that off to see if it makes a difference. I...

    [kubuntu] Re: Corrupted low memory

Be aware that 19.10 reaches End-of-Life this month. You'll want to upgrade to 20.04 sooner rather than later.
  5. Re: Impossible to fsck sda2 because always mounted

If it's an external drive then it could be cabling or similar causing you problems rather than the drive itself.

I mentioned it mostly to say that it happens automatically every certain number...
  6. Re: Impossible to fsck sda2 because always mounted

If you are having errors even after reinstalling, that seems like hardware failing to me.

For being able to run fsck without mounting the partition that holds fsck, there are two approaches. The...
  7. [ubuntu] Re: Is it possible to install a BIOS update from an .exe file?

You'd put the file somewhere that the UEFI can read from - the ESP or a FAT-formatted flash drive are good candidates. Then there'll be a button that you can press to get into the UEFI setup, which...
  8. [ubuntu] Re: Is it possible to install a BIOS update from an .exe file?

In my experience you generally don't need to even need to do that; just point the UEFI at the file and it does the rest itself.
  9. [ubuntu] Re: Is it possible to install a BIOS update from an .exe file?

UEFI can update itself. Even the ancient BIOS was updated from DOS/FreeDOS rather than Windows. Don't assume from the name what the process is.

Re: new user problem with graphics

Well, you're using the nouveau driver now.

It wouldn't be my choice. Trying to run brand-new Linux on that hardware, particularly as a new user, is going to be a significant uphill struggle....

[SOLVED] Re: How to increase volume of an MP4

The term you'll be looking for is compression. It lowers the peaks so that you can then increase the levels of everything.

Re: new user problem with graphics

That is very old, and is not supported by current Nvidia drivers. The last branch that supported that device was the 304 branch. That was available in 16.04, and was available for 18.04 through the...

    [ubuntu] Re: sources

To aid in understanding, that kind of change is fairly common. It's not specific to apt.

Some application or framework is configured by a single configuration file and, at some point, that gets...

    Re: what is your flavor?

I was using a similar setup for a long time: gnome-flashback/Compiz, but I switched to KDE. I get the panels-and-menus workflow that I'm used to (plus wobbly windows and the desktop cube), and I have...

    Re: Ubuntu crashes

I know you said you weren't particularly looking for support, but
This sounds like an out of memory situation rather than a high load situation. Linux generally remains responsive under load but...
  17. [SOLVED] Re: Ubuntu 20.04 Package Repository and Snapd Software version mismatches!

There's nothing wrong; they are parallel distribution methods.

The versions in the repositories are fixed at (a little while before) the date that the version of Ubuntu is released, although they...

    Re: Desktop problem

As already mentioned, the Gnome devs have a very particular idea of how people should use their desktop and have taken steps to ensure that's how their users do so. It used to be much more easily...
  19. [ubuntu] Re: Fans are locked to max speed, very noisy, please help

There's a coolbits setting you have to apply elsewhere to enable fan control through Nvidia settings.
  20. Re: Is it possible to install GTA San Andreas in Ubuntu 18.04 ?

    [xubuntu] Re: 4K question

It depends on the source. Outputting a 4K image is pretty trivial. Outputting 4K video is not that much harder. Outputting 4K video with hardware acceleration so that you get decent performance,...

[ubuntu] Re: SM58 microphone with Ubuntu

The Scarlett 2i2 has been pretty painless. 2 inputs, tactile gain control, phantom power if you want to use something that needs it in the future. You just plug it in and it works.
  23. Re: Returning to dual-booting after a hiatus

This would be my recommendation. Install Windows (if you want it) in UEFI with GPT partitioning and then install (K)Ubuntu 20.04. Anything else just makes things harder for negative benefit.

    Also,...

    [ubuntu] Re: Processor Load

Exactly this. That processor has a maximum temperature of 90 C. If your cooling solution doesn't keep the processor below that temperature at load, the processor will throttle to reduce the load so...
  25. [lubuntu] Re: Unable to install wine E:Malformed line 53 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (
