chmod 666 * -R for most of the drive.

I was able to get it to work by installing grub2. Not sure what got messed up, but I can boot now.

I tried all the above and no difference. I also tried going into synaptic and reinstalling linux-image and grub, but to no avail. Any other ideas? Is there no way to just use the live cd to boot...
