  1. [ubuntu] Re: Can I get a list of the file types stored on my hard drive?

    find / -type f -exec file -b {} \; | sort | uniq
find will list all files on your system, file -b will print file type. sort will sort them and uniq will make sure each type is listed only once....
  2. Re: Is Java 8 still updated in Ubuntu 20.04 (LTS)?

    See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories

There are 4 sections in the repositories: main, restricted, universe, multiverse. They differ in terms of support and licensing.
  3. Re: What is the lightest .txt editor (what is a clone of windows notepad)

Just checked with a 2.2MB plain text file. Nano needs 9MB to just open it (no editing yet), vim needs 14MB and mousepad needs 55MB (resident memory as reported by top). Nano and vim aren't exactly...

    Re: Dualboot WITHOUT Grub??

Can the Windows drive be disabled in UEFI? That should work. Otherwise, grub will be installed on the EFI partition of the Windows drive, even if you select the Ubuntu drive for that. It's considered...

[ubuntu] Re: putting multible files into one

Put them in some archive format. Several exist. The traditional archive format on Linux is .tar, but you could use .zip or some other instead. The traditional format on Windows is .zip, so if the...
  6. [ubuntu] Re: Change all home Ubuntu folders path in a NTFS partition to share them with Window

Okay, if you're interested in the internals of Windows and don't mind occasionally breaking it
  7. [ubuntu] Re: Upgrade partially failed 20.04 to 21.04

It complains that the packages gdebi-core and gdebi are not installed. Have you made sure they're actually installed?

There's also a syntax warning (just a warning) from a python script belonging...

[SOLVED] Re: connecting my cell phone

Try your phone's settings. They allow you to choose what the phone makes available to the computer: nothing (just charge), networking, photos, any file. Where and how depends on the details of your...
  9. [ubuntu] Re: Change all home Ubuntu folders path in a NTFS partition to share them with Window

Windows has some protections in place to prevent you from damaging system files. Those protections don't work when accessing the filesystem from Ubuntu. The filesystem driver for NTFS on Linux was...
  10. [ubuntu] Re: Drive 2 is under media and is treated as a removable drive

Your filemanager can mount whatever filesystem it finds and will do so in /media. It treats removable filesystems and internal ones in the same way. The solution is to make an entry for this second...

    [SOLVED] Re: Upgrade to 21.10

We get threads about this every 6 months. It's normal that it takes up to two weeks before the upgrade is released. Sometimes longer.
  12. [ubuntu] Re: Keep recieving "Sorry, try again" message when entering password

I understand you're doing this on a remote Ubuntu server, from a Windows 10 client. The password you need is your password on the server. It has nothing to do with anything you did to your Windows 10...

Re: Text on websites is too light to read

I wouldn't expect ttf-mscorefonts-installer to make a difference. I've never had that installed and never had any such problems with Firefox.

You shouldn't need specific themes or extensions to...

[SOLVED] Re: Can't boot into system!

It only appears to detect one hard drive, sda, which appears to be a live disk on a 128GB Lexar USB Flash Drive, according to line 77. So no internal hard drive is detected. Loose cable maybe?

    Re: Ubuntu 20.04 Skipping Windows

It appears that Windows is in legacy mode and Ubuntu in UEFI mode, on separate drives. The Windows drive has a Windows bootloader, the Ubuntu drive has an EFI partition with Ubuntu bootloader.

    Re: Ubuntu 20.04 Skipping Windows

Boot-Repair can create a boot info summary, giving you a link to share on the forums. Can you give us that link? That will give some more information.

Windows 10 is usually installed in UEFI mode....
  18. [xubuntu] Re: repeated error messages when running apt-get

  19. Re: 30 seconds into using ubuntu and it's already broken!

Somehow, the archive containing the upgrade was corrupted. Try deleting it and redownloading:
    sudo apt clean
    sudo apt update
    sudo apt install -f
    That's normal security. See...

  21. [ubuntu] Re: How to turn off all the bells and whistles/ basic mode/adjust for best perf.

Best is not install the bells and whistles in the first place. Use a lighter desktop environment (like the one you get in Lubuntu) or install no desktop environment at all, just a window manager. Or...
  22. [ubuntu] Re: Change all home Ubuntu folders path in a NTFS partition to share them with Window

The reason why it didn't work, was that after rebooting the Windows partition wasn't mounted, so the directories the XDG_*_DIR pointed to didn't exist.

Best to use /etc/fstab to mount your Windows...
  23. [ubuntu] Re: Is ext4 the only way to copy files from Pre-Fail but OK HDD?

FAT doesn't support files larger than 4GB. Support for NTFS was reverse engineered on Linux. Strange errors may occur, although generally it works. It could be a problem with block allocation,...
