Yes it should have remembered that text file. It seems that persistence is not working there.

Not much help I'm afraid for...
You would need another USB stick or drive to install Ubuntu on to.
You currently have an Ubuntu system on your current USB stick which you can use as is. You should also have persistence, i.e. you...
Pretty sure that the nouveau video driver can't cope with sleep yet on a Mac (or it couldn't last time I tried it).
I would expect grub to appear.
I appreciate the grub timeout but what happens if you install a new kernel, for instance, that won't boot? With no access at all to grub you can't choose to boot a...
That's very neat. It's a bit involved but neat.
If you reboot holding the Alt key and get your boot menu up and then hold down the shift key (and keep holding it down) whilst clicking on Ubuntu does...
That's alright then, though it didn't appear to re-create itself on mine. Anyway, as long as it's there that's ok.
Do you still have a firmware.scap file in EFI/APPLE/EXTENSIONS folder?
That is used to process firmware updates and should not be removed.
Interesting. Fedora must do it differently.
As I said, I'm not sure about your first point, so can't really comment further on it.
The only way I know of to boot Ubuntu via EFI stub is by using rEFInd which will do that after copying the...
I don't know whether that should be done or not.
I suspect that renaming it may break the boot sequence as the files needed to boot are in that folder.
For example, if you now install Windows in...
I use VMWare Fusion rather than Parallels. In Fusion, after installing Trusty, I needed to re-install/update VMWare tools. Is there something similar in Parallels?
Section 5 of the Installation section of the guide below explains why efibootmgr needs to be changed.

Thank you for your comments and I'm happy to hear that all went well :-)
Sadly encryption is a layer of complexity too far for me. I have no need for encryption so it's not something I've ever...
This is a whole different subject than what this thread is about :)
I would have thought that installing Ubuntu on to the firewire disc would be better (as it would automatically be persistent),...
Yes, USB devices are slower than hard drives - sort of. Especially if using USB2 devices.
It's not as slow as having to do all previously done changes over again :-)
See sudodus' post above.
Does the USB device appear on your desktop?
Does the USB device show up on your desktop? If so run the unmount command first.
Thanks for the updates sally2 :-)
Speeds of flash drives definitely differ wildly.
I wasn't aware of any problems caused by a hard shutdown. I haven't had the need to do a hard shutdown so far :-)...
Yes, that's right. They are flash drives, in that they use flash memory rather than a spinning hard drive (and yes, they are replacing optical drives).
Their advantage is that their read/write...
Lol
It depends on what you want and how your system is set up.
I wanted persistence in a Ubuntu Live USB because without it I have to install some packages to get my wifi working. I would have to...
It's not a case of hijacking the thread. Not at all.
None of the other methods that I know of can create a persistent Live USB. They will boot on a Mac though.
You spoke of a 2 TB USB drive rather...
To be honest I'm not absolutely sure what you want to achieve.
The point of this thread is to make an Ubuntu Live USB which has persistence and which is bootable on a Mac.
You seem to be trying to...
Might be time to have a rest and come back to it with fresh eyes and a clear head :-)
I see no reason why it should'nt work though.
