    Re: Problems with apt-get update

Something didn't complete in the install. The sources pointing at the local media should have been cleaned up during the install and left pointing at local mirrors for your country.

    I've never...
  2. [kubuntu] Re: How compare content of directories and different files in kubuntu

I would use rsync in dry-run mode. From the rsync manpage:

-n, --dry-run perform a trial run with no changes made
  3. [server] Re: Two external drives suddenly not mounting properly

Simplified to see the logical order:

    UUID=19b5b845-d8b1-4d9f-ad65-f3e29a78fa6e / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1
    UUID=aa33fe39-744d-4eff-b9fd-5188c4794489 /boot ext4...
  4. [server] Re: Two external drives suddenly not mounting properly

Did you run the mount command - no options?
/dev/sdc can change from boot to boot. That's why the system uses UUID instead.
blkid command will show the UUID to current device mapping.

    Sorry,...
  5. [server] Re: Two external drives suddenly not mounting properly

Run mount to see the actual mount commands, options, locations. Sadly, the output is ugly. Also, /Media/ and /media/ are very different. Usually, storage that a file manager mounts goes to...
  6. [server] Re: Where to auto mount a usb drive in Ubuntu Server

"automount" is a very specific tool. It mounts storage, local or network, when requested and later, after it isn't used any longer, umounts that storage "automatically". On Linux, that is...
  7. Re: If I have 2 versions of Ubuntu on separate disk partitions and open malware.....

No. it is more complicated than that. Loopholes don't provide security.

Need daily, versioned, backups and don't allow physical access to anyone untrusted. Every different user should have their...

[SOLVED] Re: Do I have to update Firefox Manually?

It depends on how the software was installed whether any special updating is needed or not.

If you always use the package manager to find, download, and install software, then the updates for that...

  10. Re: Recursively search files with exclusions and inclusions

    find /local/data/ -type f -name 'session[0-9]+*db' -print
Appears to be what you want, but not what is being described.
  11. Re: Recursively search files with exclusions and inclusions

find is one of those commands where seeing a few examples is crazy helpful. Also, don't be afraid to pipeline.

    find /local/data/ -type f -name session_\*db -print | egrep -v...
  12. Re: If I have 2 versions of Ubuntu on separate disk partitions and open malware.....

Yes, it could, unless the other storage is

unavailable through permissions from the current userid and you haven't allowed sudo to run on that account
    encrypted and not "opened"
    read-only...

[xubuntu] Re: pulseaudio is running at 100%

Someday, pulse audio will be stable. They've only had 10 yrs. It is much better now than it was 5 yrs ago, but still far from perfect.

Kill the pulseaudio process. It should automatically restart....

    Re: Blogging Software Recommendations?

    Static generators ARE the answer.

Nobody should be using plain FTP since 2002-ish. Use rsync over an ssh connection. That's the default for rsync.

Running the generator and running rsync when...

[ubuntu] Re: external hard disk permanent mount

    Re: GUI for this?

People coming from Windows often don't understand the power that plain text can bring to data like this. It is a different way of thinking because they haven't been exposed to the 100+ little text...
  17. Re: "Too many primary partitions" when installing with pre-seed - 18.04 desktop

Or it could be the 15 other commands at the top which setup the base for partitioning?
As you say, partman may not support it for auto-partitioning, but GPT has been supported since at least 2012,...
  18. Re: "Too many primary partitions" when installing with pre-seed - 18.04 desktop

Heck, until 20.04, I found setting up LVM during installation too much hassle. The 20.04 installer is 100x better - I almost cried. Perhaps in another 10 yrs, it will get to the level that CentOS had...

  20. Re: "Too many primary partitions" when installing with pre-seed - 18.04 desktop

I just know that MBR/MSDOS partitions have limitation that are a hassle and that GPT doesn't. I've never done partman anything stuff. You have me thinking, if it is easy for partitioning, it would be...

  22. Re: External HDD (LUKS Encrypted) Will it work on another Ubuntu Installation.

    Re: Help with networking server

    a) servers have static IPs. No need for network-manager. Don't. Just don't. Don't use DHCP.
    b) to work on servers from remote locations, use ssh. If going over the internet, never use passwords,...
  24. Re: "Too many primary partitions" when installing with pre-seed - 18.04 desktop

Use GPT partition table, not MSDOS. GPT supports at least 100 primary partitions and none of that extended-primary + logical partition crap.
