this worked for me in Precise with Gnome Shell
gconftool-2 --set /apps/metacity/general/button_layout --type string ":close"
Actual LAMP developer.
Aspiring Django developer.
Gnome Shell is a better DE than Unity. I don't like the Unity launcher. I do like the 'activities' view in GS. Unity uses about 1GB of memory post-login on my laptop. GS uses half of that; only a...
The update manager doesn't notify me of updates since I switched from Xubuntu Oneiric to Gnome Shell Oneiric. I have "Automatically check for updates: Daily" and "When there are security updates:...
Best wishes to all Ubuntu users for 2012 8)
Did anyone answer this?
Probably, yes. Since C is a subset of C++, any C program is also a C++ program. Which means any C++ compiler (and presumably C++ IDE too) should handle C just fine.
Lubuntu and Xubuntu have far lower system requirements than Ubuntu. Ubuntu on my Thinkpad idles at 1GB memory usage - most of your memory. Xubuntu on the other hand idles at about 0.5GB.
I'd say...
Hi there,
Can anyone recommend any Python quick start guides or tutorials, especially if they have any particular focus on Ubuntu development?
I'm a professional LAMP programmer and I've done...
I'm not sure about the Ubuntu Software Centre, but if you use Synaptic, you can find out where the installed files are by finding the package, going to its properties, and going to the 'Installed...

You have to store times somehow. Most modern databases support their own datetime datatype, but storing times as integers is a reasonable database-independent solution. Arithmetic operations on...
The Keyboard -> Application Shortcuts manager xfce4-keyboard-settings in Xubuntu is excellent, much more usable than I remember it being to set up keyboard shortcuts in Natty under GNOME.
I have a...
You'd need to install the Dropbox client on both machines, yes.
But once the Shared Folder is set up, you don't even need a command to synchronize. As soon as you write to the Shared Folder, the...
You don't really save anything by buying an OS-free laptop, unfortunately. I considered Novatech, but went for a Thinkpad (that came with W7) for the build quality. Lenovo's laptops generally play...
Xubuntu Oneiric is blindingly fast compared to Ubuntu Natty. :o
Yeah, he did that. His issue is he's got no Java runtime.
I'm pretty sure ubuntu-restricted-extras installs the OpenJDK, and that works for me on Xubuntu Oneiric, both a fresh install and an...
What about Google Docs or Dropbox (Shared Folders)?
I would've thought it'd be better to just use tasksel really, as that installs the LAMP components where they're 'supposed' to be, rather than putting it in /opt and using xampp ...
It'll reinstall them for you, (possibly) losing any package-specific data in the process, see my previous post.
I went from Ubuntu Natty to Xubuntu Oneiric by 'upgrading' from a Xubuntu Oneiric Live USB. I didn't have any problems.
(I then got rid of old packages by following this guide.)
It's not really...
Yeah, works for me just fine on Xubuntu Oneiric too.
I installed it with:
sudo apt-get install keepassx
You'll need to install phpmyadmin separately, after the above:
sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin
Having said that, I've just tried it on Oneiric and it wasn't immediately available on...
How did you actually install LAMP in the first place? I would clean up the broken install, if you can. Then, I find the path of least resistance is to use tasksel.
Make sure tasksel is actually...
In Xubuntu, it gets an entry under 'Development' ...
Otherwise, start a terminal and try:
which netbeans
If that comes out with nothing try:
locate netbeans
(Since I only need Netbeans...
