i have no solution, but as a workaround, i am using linux mint 32bit from a usb stick, to watch 4od programmes.
everything plays fine & mint has added advantage of having flash...

sudo apt-get install xorg-x11-server-Xorg
then reboot
try
sudo startx
for anyone interested, things i have tried:
1. works with artistx (thx for advice), but that is a dog of a os & should be avoided.
2. works with puppy linux, both ubuntu based & slakware based...

ok back in terminal, try
sudo apt-get remove gnome-shell-extensions-*
then
ok, open a terminal (ctrl alt t)
and type this in
sudo remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf
enter your password when prompted.
reboot
i had something similar months ago, & for the life of me, cannot remember what it was ! sorry.
however, it was an error pop up of some sort, with background & text in white & therefore unreadable....
to avoid this, open nvidia settings from a terminal:
sudo nvidia-settings
you will be prompted for your password, enter it.
make alterations & save them.
have you got nvidia in your start up apps?
if no, add it. command should be
sh -c '/usr/bin/nvidia-settings --load-config-only'

try deleting the .nvidia folder from your home folder, re-boot & try again.
try opening nvidia settings from terminal, using sudo:
sudo nvidia-settings
make changes & see if error still occurs.
