got it, I chose custom instead of default and pointed it at ~/etc/xdg/menus/xfce-applications.menu and I'm good.
Ad-hoc mode is when two clients communicate with each other without an access point.
Stock access points will not communicate with each other. You need hardware capable of bridge mode, client...
