    Hi!

If you are unable to boot in to Ubuntu at all, try booting using a USB stick made in Win10 using these instructions

Then attempt to repair the GRUB menu with this method

    If you can log...
  2. [ubuntu] Re: Dual Boot error with Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS

What boot manager are you using?
Are the OS's on separate drives or in partitions on one drive?
    Is it a UEFI system?
  3. Re: How to have a custom Grub2 menu that is maintenance free

Hi Cavsfan - my old frankenbox finally fell over so I bit the bullet and went all new. This combo should last a week before obsolescence, it's that cutting edge :-)

    Anyway, upon plugging in HDDs...
  4. Re: USB external hdd issues & data retrieval

Hi Herman - yes I know that - I dual boot and still have a lot of stuff in Win, both home and work. It's the most compatible storage format for my use at the moment.

    I think it's buggered though....
  5. Re: USB external hdd issues & data retrieval

Thanks guys - more learning! :)

As I said above, I got some files from it intermittently and transferred them to another drive.

I've since reformatted it as one partition in NTFS. I have copied...
  6. Re: USB external hdd issues & data retrieval

I managed to get some files from the disk in Windows. I couldn't chkdsk it, every time I tried to access it it went "missing". For some reason starting the Seagate disk utility kicked it in to life...
  7. Re: USB external hdd issues & data retrieval

Thanks - yes I found that too just after I posted. I've gone through the list and I'm stopped at

  8. USB external hdd issues & data retrieval

Hi, I have a Seagate usb external hdd that shows up as sde1 formatted to ntfs which I'm pretty sure is dying.
I'd like to get the data off it but I'm having some trouble. It shows up in Disks and...

  10. Re: How to have a custom Grub2 menu that is maintenance free

Gee whiz Cavsfan, not having to spend hours chasing up obscure settings and avoiding screens and screens of cli work is going to upset the purists!!!

Awesome Cavsfan, thanks & please excuse my denseness :-)
  12. Re: How to have a custom Grub2 menu that is maintenance free

Hello Cavsfan - I want to change the font colours on my screen as they are hard to see on the background.

The wiki says to replace the lines from #122 but mine is a bit different (or is it??) :p

  13. Re: How to have a custom Grub2 menu that is maintenance free

Cheers! I tend to update every release but do a clean install every second one.
A bigger priority is updating this box to the 20th C :-)
    Keep up the good work!
  14. Re: How to have a custom Grub2 menu that is maintenance free

Does one need to be "very" brave to use 17.04 Cavsfan?? :P
  15. Re: How to have a custom Grub2 menu that is maintenance free

Hi Cavsfan - yep that was it.

I have a little message in the start of that bash file that echoes what's actually going on and I'd upgraded to 16.10 & hadn't tidied it up.
    Cheers!! ):P
  16. Re: How to have a custom Grub2 menu that is maintenance free

I've spent an hour looking through the wiki(s), my directories and the web but I can't find/remember how I customised the terminal output when running
    sudo update-grub
    It outputs the distributions...

[all variants] General kernel upgrade question

    Hi all,
Generally, is it worth upgrading kernels from the release versions to whatever Linus has recently released? (e.g. Ubuntu 16.04 LTS kernel 4.4.0-34 to the new 4.7).

As a person who is is...
  19. Re: How to have a custom Grub2 menu that is maintenance free

    Cheers!
I only have XP in the list as this machine is a Frankenstein of old parts and that OS is on an old HDD from about 2003. In the near future I'm hoping to build something with some serious...

  22. Re: How to have a custom Grub2 menu that is maintenance free

The only issue I encountered was that for some reason the upgrade borked keyboard and mouse capability in GRUB.

I was able to re-enable through the BIOS in the Integrated Peripherals table, in the...
