Seems like you want a LTS equivalent distro. If you don't think she would like Ubuntu 12.04 then I would look at Debian stable or a RHEL clone like CentOS, Scientific, PUIAS, etc. That way once you...
Linux runs on a ton of different hardware and since System 76 is a company that sells Linux products you will be able to run any Linux distro on it.
Netpkg is not a great tool in my opinion. I would definitely checkout Salix and Vector both of which use slapt-get and G-Slapt.
don't buy into the FUD, there is no issue with Slackware's future.
To my ears what you are describing sounds like Slackware would be the answer. A 4gb usb stick is just fine for a usb install. Just have a look at the usb readme...
I not quite sure why you are so bent out of shape. I was just trying to help the OP the way that I know how to.
I don't currently run opensuse but I have in the past. I used zypper as the tool...
Hi there, i686 is actually one of the most commonly supported architechtures by the majority of Linux distros. Trisquel is a Libre distribution and one of the very vew Linux distributions endorsed...
Using zypper should not be thought as obscure commands for someone who has chosen to use opensuse anymore than apt is obscure for someone using a debian-based system.
I never said RTM to the OP nor did I assume it makes sense to him. I did provide the OP a guide to help administer his/hers/friends system. The instructions aren't obscure but are in fact specific...
the link I provided earlier with instructions on how to use zypper will tell you how to add or remove repos.

Based off that message you don't have the games repo for 12.1 enabled, you have the games repo for 11.3. 11.3 went end of life January 20th, 2012 and would be the reason why it cannot reach that...
would you please do me the favor of posting the output zypper lr so I can see the repos you have setup?
I am not going to be the one to tell you if you are secure or not with a misconfigured repo,...
Can you reach this site? http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/games/openSUSE_12.1/
It seems to me that the games repo is available. Please check your setup. As far as it being vital to your...
From what you posted previously you did not enable the games repo. Make sure you have the games repo enabled for the version you are running and then update your system.
Please see this link:...
If all your packages are up to date as you stated in an earlier post then I'm not sure what you need?
zypper is the command line package management tool in opensuse, think apt-get on debian distros or yum on fedora/rhel. zypper lr will list your repos. the reason I wanted to see the repos you have...
could you run zypper ref and then post the output of zypper lr?
I would stay away from DSL, it is dead as can be so you won't get any further security updates.
Vector Linux light edition is a good choice for that hardware.
I couldn't really say if the deriviatives are less stable etc as I haven't used any for an extended period of time. I think the point was what is the intended goal of using a Slackware derivative? ...

thanks, fixed
I rip all my music into FLAC and mp3 using abcde might be an option for you.
I responded to another person in another thread who wanted to know a little bit about Slackware, you might find it useful.

Personally I would skip the derivatives and just try Slackware. If you don't want to do that then SalixOS, Vector, Absolute, and Zenwalk are all good.
