    However you can also install all that using Synaptic (System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager) if it gives you problems.

    Do you have the correct codecs installed? VLC uses it's own which are separate/different to those used by Rhythmbox. You'll probably want the various Gstreamer packages (good, bad and ugly).
