is there a program for ripping or copying DVDs so you can copy them to a DVD-R? I tried K9Copy but it used to always freeze at 96% and it would only rip one scene.

I reccomend that you do not use add/remove to install packages. It is very sluggish and has many glitches, instead try using synaptics package manager which can be found by going to...

its prompting you to enter your password because those packages make changes to the way ubuntu "behaves". Its sort of hard to explain really.
is it possible that you could download the .deb files that are in a system update to a CD or USB drive so that you have the latest updates
