so i was playing a game on my windows partition when it suddenly crashed ( surprise surprise :P ). i had to do hold down the power button to shut it down... i tried boot back into Ubuntu... it acted ...

i removed all the ppa but the official ubuntu one. then i ran
sudo apt-get update then
do-release-upgrade and that did the trick,

so i open the update manager today and push the "upgrade" button to update from 11.10 to 12.04. the tool downloads okay but the internet connection goes down, anw i cant find the tool...

I would suggest a live cd/usb to recover and backup your files, after that a re-install of the OS.
I suggest that you reinstall the OS on your pendrive and try again because there is clearly something missing in the current installation good luck

if ur connecting through ur windows 7 you need the samba package to get your ubuntu to read the windows connection
sudo apt-get install samba smbfs
