Hi, I've switched from Mac to Linux.
In Mac, in the printer dialogue, it has a dropdown box, that allows you to store different CUPS presets. I cannot find this in Ubuntu 20.04.
How do I...
If you are able to copy and paste the error message into a post, I can point you in the right direction.

You need to read the 2nd post in this thread and follow it instructions.

My brightness on a ASUS 1005PE does not work until I add acpi_osi=Linux
I suspect that your 1201 needs something different. Why are you adding acpi_osi=Linux? What are you trying to get to work>
Did you ever solve this? I had the same issue 12 months on. I discovered that it was because I had made the /tmp directory "noexec" as soon as I made it executable, we were fine.
sudo mount -o...
My prefered method is not the alien RPM method above, but rather to install the fake-gs-esp method:
install fake-gs-esp
install cndrv common
install canon driver specific to the printerThis...
Try the attached file, extract the DEB from it, double click it and install it. It does nothing, except it tells your system that "gs-esp" is PROVIDED by the package "fake-gs-esp"
It then allows...
I have never got 10.10 working right, and Fn+F2 does not work. One thing 10.10 does better than 10.04 LTS is hotswap monitors, and resume from sleep and the detection of monitors. 10.10 seems a bit...
Must admit I've just gone back to 10.04 because of Fn+F2 not working.
I have also had huge problems with sleeping, where it seems to either lock up, or something weird happens with the monitor...
Have you tried with just:
acpi_osi="Linux"
I find this makes my backlight work okay, and wireless [Fn]+[F2] then works for me
Discovered that the problem is with "X server security." The issue is that root is trying to lunch something on someone elses display, and this is not allowed. The way around this is:
xhost +local:...
metacity is already turned off for me, and notify-send still does not work.
I installed libnotify
libnotify (notify-send) makes use of dbus to get a pop-up, it is essentially a user interface....
I have a script running from a hotkey,
it tries to do this:
DISPLAY=:0.0; notify-send "hi there"this worked okay in Lucid (Ubuntu 10.04), but doesn't work in Maverick 10.10
anyone with any...
Yes, I do have Ubuntu 10.04 working fine on my 1005PE.
Two things to get it working are:
1) acpi_osi=Linux (this makes brightness work)
2) compiled wireless drivers so that wireless works
I...
@formaldehyde_spoon
The problem is the bit you added:
acpi_backlight=vendor
I have read that you SHOULD add this, but it has always created issues for me, it has never solved anything, at least...
That BIOS is very old (Feb 2010). I have never had any issues with enabling/disabling the wireless (I assume that is what Fn+F2 does on yours?)
You can go here and check for the latest version:...
@misGnomer
I agree, a repository for ath9k would be nice. I have no idea how to do that though.
You're right about recompiling with a kernel update, for example my modules for 2.6.32.21 will...
Okay, I can confirm this:
1) with out acpi_osi=Linux
a) brightness control works in a chunky but linear fashion
b) brightness on-screen-display OSD works
c) mute does NOT work
d) vol...
I upgraded by BIOS to 1103, and noticed that the screen brightness worked better, then it started to play-up again, so I changed back to acpi_osi=Linux
Incidentally, the issue with the nrightness...
I don't know, all I can tell you is the sound keys work for me. My issue was with screen brightness, and maybe in fixing that, I stumbled across another issue I didn't know about?
@khunter1
Hi Khunter1,
I was wondering if you managed to get wireless working, I just re-read the post and realised that I didn't answer your question. Sorry.
I didn't realise that you were...
Sorry, my post assumed you had built things before.
If you do:
sudo apt-get install build-essential
it will install what you need.
I used to use the development version of 2.6.33, but it would only work with less than 2GB of ram, so I gave it up. I never thought to see if there was a newer kernel.
What you need to do is goto:...
