Same situation for me, except that the "Have the file manager manage the desktop" doesn't solve the problem...

I had the same troubles lately, after I mistakenly uninstalled gnome. I couldn't install libpt anymore.

In the end I found that the problem was my /etc/apt/sources.list. I found that libpt2.6.7...
