As I remember I got an OS disc from Dell which was incorrectly labelled "Recovery Disc" even though it was a Full Win XP Disc which I could use to install XP in virtual box. :D
Have you tried burning it at a slower speed e.g. 4x, or 8x instead of the default max speed ?
We have a Konica Minolta laser printer (b/w) as well, can't remember the exact model but it works flawlessly under ubuntu, just as it does under windows

maybe he wants to try out how good the distro works with his hardware and in that case there is actually no way around installing it into different parition except maybe trying out the live cd first.
to tun off bluetooth on startup on a sony vaio you need to use spicctrl (Sony Programmable I/O Control Device Driver)
basically:
spicctrl -l0
turns off bluetooth
so edit your /etc/rc.local...
