    [ubuntu] Re: Wine

No it won't. The reason Linux is not vulnerable to viruses is the whole permission thing : You can't really write outside your home directory without expressed permission. That should be safe for you.
  2. [ubuntu] Re: Jaunty Freezes when Image Loaded in Gimp

Maybe it's not updated, and the bug has been corrected? Open up a terminal and type:

    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

    See if updating helps.
  3. [ubuntu] Re: Installing Nvidia drivers from their website

    Try this.
  4. [ubuntu] Re: Strange Crash when computer is alone. (Maybe he is lonely.)

That is not much memory at all, the recommended RAM for the most basic Ubuntu (Xubuntu) is 256 MB RAM.

Increase your swap partition, that should help a lot. Boot off the Live CD, and go to System...

[ubuntu] Re: Speeding up Ubuntu for complete newbie

I had the same problem: intel graphics and slow ubuntu. The reason it is slow is because the current intel graphics drivers for linux are not very good.

Follow this guide, it helped me a lot. HERE...
  6. [ubuntu] Re: Brasero does not let me write to optical media

    First try:

    gpasswd -a <YOUR USERNAME> optical

If that doesn't work, in a terminal type:

  7. Re: Easiest way to Dual Boot XP & UNR for AAO-250?

First off, its always good to ask questions. After all, how else would we learn? :) Questions are always welcome here.

And if I might suggest, there's no need to order a pre-done USB off the...

[ubuntu] Re: kernel does not recognize boot disk

In the future, your problem was that line "/dev/disk/by-uuid/aa8ee64-4798-437a-a746-7a2663d6c95f does not exist".

That means some partitioning must have been done or something that changed your...

[ubuntu] Re: permission to copy files

Where are you trying to copy the folders from and to?

And you are on one Ubuntu installation trying to copy things from your old Ubuntu installation, is that right?
  10. [ubuntu] Re: Didn't upgrade properly to Intrepid. How do I fix it?

I think the problem is that you're booting into an old kernel (the 2.6.24 kernel instead of 2.6.27). Post your /boot/grub/menu.lst, and the result of:

    ls -l /boot
  11. [ubuntu] Re: Export non-core OS packages and configuration

    To backup:

    sudo dpkg --get-selections > dpkg.packages.backup.txt
    sudo gconftool-2 --dump / > gconfpreferences.backup.xml

    To restore in the future:

  14. [all variants] Re: Scripting : Provide delegate root access (includes a handy CPU Frequency script..

Is there a reason that your script is in /sys? If I'm not mistaken, you can't even really write to /sys, as its mounted by itself. For a script, just put it in /usr/bin or /usr/local/bin?

    And make...

[all variants] Re: Issues mounting several HDDs

Well, personally I've never heard of "drives remapping themselves", but even if this does happen it cannot hurt to do it by UUID.

    Post the result of:

    cat /etc/fstab

    The underline-naming...

[ubuntu] Re: Youtube - Full Screen Slow/ low frame rate

I would definitely update the driver instead of messing with the 177 driver.

Personally, I wouldn't reformat the MP3 player, because with MP3 players they might have different partitions / special files / specific different things that might make it unusable afterwards.
