  1. [ubuntu] NFS exports access and authentication.

We don't use NFS and haven't for a long time since all of the clients are Windows. We use SAMBA for file sharing.
I have used NFS in the distant past when we ran a number of SUN and other Unix...
  2. [ubuntu] Re: Repurposing an old fat 32 external Hard Drive.

    OK, Thanks for the insight.

I've decided I'm going to copy all of the readable files onto another device and maybe that will give me a clue as to what is there and whether it is worth saving....

    Re: i386 support

It's a little confusing since Ubuntu calls some of the 32 bit packages i386, even though the kernels won't run on a real 386.
  4. [ubuntu] Re: Repurposing an old fat 32 external Hard Drive.

    Thanks.

I don't really know what is on it and I can't tell too much because the filesystem is so screwed up.
I also did try to convert it to NTFS and that failed as well. I got an error about...
  5. [ubuntu] Repurposing an old fat 32 external Hard Drive.

I have an old external backup drive that I'm attempting to repurpose. It is a 2TB USB3 Desktop drive with external power supply.

I've tried to run chkdsk on it on a Windows machine and Windows 10...
  6. [ubuntu] Re: Cross referencing folder so size can be chnaged

If it is a folder the full path would be useful.
The OP does seems a little touchy though.

Folders is not an especially *nix term. Mostly they'er called directories. They contain files...
  7. Re: Help, just started using linux and I'm confused

Just a thought - If you were to install XAMPP (Apache MariaDB, PHP, and Perl) using one of the installation methods outside the repositories you might introduce incompatibilities with the "standard"...
  8. Re: Libre "Base" database not installed nor installable via any apparent means

Is it installed as a snap?
  9. [ubuntu] Re: How does it work - install software

As I understand it for a third party application to be included in the repositories either Ubuntu must decide to maintain the application repository with their own resources or a third party...
  10. Re: Ubuntu alternative to Excel with User Defined Functions

Libra Office has some compatibility with VBA, but how well it works is beyond my experience. Your best bet would be to download Libra Office and try some of the spreadsheets.

[ubuntu] Re: Ubuntu interferes with VOIP?

If I find a bug I'll tape it to the computer.

They swapped out our gateway without solving the problem. It could of course be something further upstream.
We thought at one point it might have...

[ubuntu] Re: Ubuntu interferes with VOIP?

We're paying them to provide VOIP so they shouldn't be doing it on purpose. But we've had some other odd occurrences which could be related to their equipment. For example for several weeks we could...

  14. Re: Port 25 blocked, need to get postfix to use 587

Yahoo basically uses ATT servers because of some agreement they have. So they publish using port 465
  15. [SOLVED] Re: Failing hard disk - can this error be caused by bad sata connection?

I worry that running a long test on an already failing disk will hurry the ultimate failure.
I's get a new disk ASAP.
If you have good backups great, if not ddrescue may be able to recover some of...
  16. Re: Samba min protocol SMB3, nmap report SMBV1

Samba attempts to negotiate the protocol based on a number of different settings.

There are a number of "protocol" statements that control this interaction

    client min protocol
    client max...
  17. Re: Port 25 blocked, need to get postfix to use 587

    [ubuntu] Re: Protecting my VPS

I second fail2 ban it will catch the port scanners and block them. It is easy to set up and will provide a degree of security while you work on the iptables.
  24. [ubuntu] Re: Samba Server Setup - Sharing Folder & User Access

By far the best method of keeping Ubuntu current is to do regular updates. I generally do it about weekly. These are official patches and even if the package version number is not updated security...
