    Please deactivate this account

Due to work commitments, I won't be able to participate on a regular basis. It'll be maybe once every 2 to 3 months, so it's pointless to keep the account going. Please deactivate this account. ...

    Re: Terminal commands

Like the other person said, there is no default root password. What I do after a fresh Ubuntu install is to open a terminal, and then type "sudo -s" (no quotes). It'll ask for your user password....
  5. [ubuntu] Re: Acer Crystal Eye webcam with Ubuntu and Skype?

With my Acer Aspire 4530, the mic works okay, but the camera doesn't no matter what program I use. I've tried it with Ubuntu 10.04.4, 11.10 and an Ubuntu-based distribution. It used to but, for some...

[SOLVED] Re: Using root password for admin stuff

What I usually do for a new Ubuntu install, although it should work no matter how long you've been running it, is to open a terminal and type "sudo -s" (no quotes). Supply your user password, and...

[SOLVED] Re: Using root password for admin stuff

I could, although for the couple or three apps that want/need admin privileges, gksu does the trick.

[SOLVED] [Solved]Re: Using root password for admin stuff

Thanks for the info. Setting root's password is one of the first things I do with a new install. sudo -s followed by passwd works for me. I've been using su-to-root to do certain things requiring...

[SOLVED] Re: Using root password for admin stuff

Yup. sudo, gksu or su-to-root work just fine. After setting root's password, it seems that su is the only thing I've found, so far anyway, that actually makes use of root's password.

[SOLVED] Re: Using root password for admin stuff

I've been using Ubuntu since at least 5.something, so I'm aware of that. It seems to be one of the few that does things that way.

[SOLVED] [Solved] Using root password for admin stuff

I'm guessing it's probably been asked before, but I'm too lazy to look. :) Is there a way to set things so that root's password, rather than the user's password, is used for administrative actions?

[ubuntu] Re: Older version of Firefox 10?

That's strange. Firefox 10 seems to have "fixed" some incompatible addons for me. As for the .tar.bz archive, move it to where you want to extract it, and then "tar jxvf filename.tar.bz" (no quotes)...

    [all variants] Re: some questions

I use Bleachbit to get rid of the .deb files after the updates are done and after I install something. A handy utility to free up some drive space.
  14. [ubuntu] Re: Problems with Admin Password and Wireless

You'll probably have to create at least the directory, and possibly the file. If you need to create the file, a blank one should do it, just for the sake of it being there.
  15. [SOLVED] Re: Need driver for Cisco Model DPC2100 DOCSIS 2.0 Cable Modem

  16. [ubuntu] Re: 11.10 Screen Brightness resets to lowest setting when I restart laptop

Okay. Open a terminal and then type "sudo gedit /etc/rc.local" without the quotes. You'll be asked for your password. Enter it, and the file will be opened in a text editor. As to the gaps between...

    Hope that helps some.
  18. [ubuntu] Re: Problems with Admin Password and Wireless

So, have you opened a terminal and typed "passwd" (no quotes) to set a new password for yourself? If not, do that and then see if everything else works like it's supposed to.
