I think i got the same problem with the extraction and i think i concluded that it was mislabelled as a bz2-file even though it weren't. Extract with "tar -xvf filename" and it should work.

Just a small update with relationship to this post.
So on ubuntu 12.04 i had to use the solution provided by neilhuang and install the rt2860sta driver which worked just fine. The standard...
I got the same issue with my linksys wmp600n where it loaded the rt2800 instead of the rt2860 driver, and this solved my problems.
