I believe the greyed out wi-fi option showed up as a result of
echo "blacklist b43" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf It appears to be up & running again.

The wi-fi has been off & on all week. Long story short 2 days ago it went out & nothing I've tried has gotten it back on. This is a different result from today.

My tower & the router have been reset, no change. My wife's laptop occasionally resets wifi connection for no apparent reason. All other wifi devices are working. Wifi network option was greyed out...

The router is about 2yrs old. It's not fois. The password I can't find is for admin log in to make changes in the router. The wireless is now working. Sorry for the confusion.
