[ubuntu] Re: Confusion about disk usage

I've never even played with BTRFS, so don't know that any of those commands are useful. When I learned that du and df output wasn't telling the truth on btrfs, that made it much less interesting to...
  2. [xubuntu] Re: is there any way to automatically lock screen without xscreensaver?

There are downsides to not having a single company responsible for all software shipped with an OS release.

Linux is a bazaar, not a cathedral. Our distros and GUIs are a loose confederacy of...

[ubuntu] Re: Confusion about disk usage

Besides what CharlesA says, there are lots of ways for storage to appear different from what we know is on the system.

Some of my most used commands are:

    lsblk -e 7 -o...
  4. [xubuntu] Re: is there any way to automatically lock screen without xscreensaver?

The GUI isn't part of the "OS".
GUIs are just another program, like a calculator. There are standards for what a GUI Window Manager should provide, ICCCM2 2.0. Some of the newest DEs don't follow...
  5. Re: Recent update has changed Alt-F2 when you drop to command line

All I know is <c>-<a>-F7 gets me to the GUI on this 18.04 system. All the others end up on consoles.
The same happens on a 20.04 install here. It was a fresh install, not an upgrade. c-a-F7.

    I...
  6. Re: Recent update has changed Alt-F2 when you drop to command line

Usually, there are multiple pseudo-ttys. F1-F10. Try them all. F7 is historically the "GUI" session.
BTW, it is possible that Wayland changes this, so I don't know what happens in that situation....
  7. [gnome] Re: 20.04 - best method for remote desktop on local network and remote network (inter

x2go works into 20.04 for me from other Ubuntu and Windows systems, but I don't have any apple stuff.
Also, I don't use Gnome3 as a DE on either the client or the server. I know Mate works. Think...
  8. Re: Which VM and setup should i choose to run a demanding program like Gigapixil AI?

VMM is just a GUI over KVM. It uses libvirt, but under the covers, it is all KVM/QEMU.

I don't know of any GUI method to setup IOMMU passthru to a guest with virt-manager. It just isn't a...

Re: snap apps not working, permission denied

You've been provided alternatives and a possible solution. Did you try those? How well did they work or not work? We can't read your mind.
Saying or implying "it doesn't work" is lacking in

  10. Re: Need help with guidance on school career path

How to start depends on what your dream job might be.

Programming, administration, security, are big areas, each with specialization. There are generalists in all of those as well, but often...

[SOLVED] Re: Network Manager and VPN

    Glad you figured this out.
ifupdown and /etc/network/interfaces has been deprecated on Ubuntu for a few years. Ubuntu moved to Netplan. BTW, Debian is **not** an official flavor of ubuntu. Would...
  12. [SOLVED] Re: Any routers that accept USB HDs formatted in ext4?

Let's think about this for a moment.
Connecting storage to a WAN router. Does that seem like a good idea?

My common sense "smells bad" test says no. Certain things don't make sense.

    [ubuntu] Re: Upgrading CPU

Two screens is better than thousands of pages. ;) Quite manageable. Plus realizing that some "warnings" are just kernel messages about hardware our system(s) don't have is useful over the long term....
  14. [ubuntu] Re: Get Window Title with Bash script under Wayland

21.10 isn't released - not until late October. Post about it all belong in the "Ubuntu Development Release" sub-forum.

Support for 20.10 will end in a few weeks, so moving to 21.04 is mandatory at...

Re: Directing traffic between two NIC's

If you want to redirect traffic, then routing must be enabled. To route, different subnets are mandatory. Having 2 NICs on the same subnet won't allow routing to easily be setup. They need to be...
  16. [gnome] Re: authenication password not accepted the first time.

I suspect the issue is that the keyboard takes a little longer to wake than the monitor does on your system. Try typing 2 characters, then backspacing 2 times before entering the login password.

    [ubuntu] Re: Upgrading CPU

I'd look for errors and warnings, but you feel free to do what you think is best.

It is a good idea to scan through an entire log file at least once ... see what's inside. Don't let your eye glaze...
  18. Re: Monitors do not power down when screen blanks

GUI stuff isn't the OS on any Linux system. Any GUI is tacked on after. That means, trying different GUIs until you find one that behaves in the way expected isn't a big deal. The GUI is just...
  19. Re: what do I need to do to run windows software and steam/EA games on ubuntu desktop

WSL lacks all sorts of capabilities that a VM provides. Any Core2 Duo or faster CPU with 6+ GB of RAM can easily run Linux inside a full VM.
Setup your network firewall to block most MS stuff and...
  20. [server] Re: ubuntu 16.04.6 - 300GB upgrade for sda - doesnt work

Post #3 from oldfred above explains the issue. It isn't LVM. It is the current legacy MBR partitions causing the limitation.

The PV must entirely be contained within sda5.
    sda5 must entirely...
  21. [server] Re: ubuntu 16.04.6 - 300GB upgrade for sda - doesnt work

    Multiple pickles in this setup.
16.04 is the first issue. That must be solved.
As part of that solution, do a fresh install of 20.04 and this time, choose GPT partitioning and create 3 partitions...
  22. [SOLVED] Re: service systemd-resolved restart results in Temporary failure in name resolution

    a) /etc/resolv.conf is usually a symbolic link to somewhere else. Quickly break that link and put the /etc/resolv.conf you want there.

    b) the process that would try to update the /etc/resolv.conf...

    [ubuntu] Re: Upgrading CPU

    YES! Leave it running overnight.

Did you look at the log files yet?!!!!!!!!!!!!! Guessing isn't helping. The answer is 99% in those logs.
  24. Re: what do I need to do to run windows software and steam/EA games on ubuntu desktop

I'm a strong believer in using virtual machines. There is very little risk to the other OSes, unlike dual booting. The storage is all "virtual" for any guest machines, so a 40G single file on...

Re: Ubuntu 21.04 Remote Desktop Sharing

21.04 support ends in December. Do you really want to bother with a non-LTS release?
Everyone on 21.04 must move to 21.10 between late-Oct and January. There's no choice - unless being unsupported...
