  2. [xubuntu] Controlling Fan Speed, Vsync etc. using non-proprietary driver

I have a HD5870 and am using the open source (non-proprietary) driver with it. Xsensors tells me its idling at 70c and Counter-Strike refuses to run above 60fps, so I've been looking to fix either of...

[ubuntu] [ATI] Secondary Monitor on the Left?

I've recently reinstalled Ubuntu 10.10 and have been struggling to make games and desktop icons behave.

From what I understand, ATI's driver makes dual monitors work by adding their resolutions...

[ubuntu] Re: BusyBox problem with Ubuntu 9.04

When I boot the Live CD (9.04), I also get this BusyBox command line. Is this a problem that only affects the Live CD, or would it happen if I managed to install Ubuntu?

    I'm attempting to install...

[ubuntu] Odd file in /usr/bin: "["

Was messing about with "Open With" in nautilus, when I spotted this file, named simply "["

Not sure what it is, but it's certainly an odd filename. I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 AMD64. Can any of you guys...

  8. [ubuntu] Enabling dual monitors on ATI drivers

Hi, I have two monitors: one with resolution 1024x768 and one with resolution 1440x900. The larger resolution one is my primary monitor, and is to the right of my secondary one on my desk.

    Using...

  10. [other] Re: Computer randomly boots from different hard drives.

Yes, GRUB is on the Ubuntu IDE drive and the Windows bootloader is on the SATA drive. I attempted to put GRUB on the Windows disk yesterday with AutoSuperGrubDisk, but it was unable to do it....
  11. [other] Re: Computer randomly boots from different hard drives.

Ok, it appears to he a hardware issue; disabling the SATA boot option left me unable to boot any OS - save for the 8.10 Live CD - until the IDE drive started being detected.
  12. [other] Re: Computer randomly boots from different hard drives.

DieB: I have tried changing boot priorities, but the problem is that the other hard drive will not be detected until an operating system boots.

gTinker: Thanks for the link, but he appears to be...
  13. [other] Computer randomly boots from different hard drives.

I've installed Ubuntu 8.10 on one IDE hard drive, and Windows XP on another SATA drive. When booting up, the computer appears to detect one after the other, often leading me to boot straight into...

[ubuntu] Re: Windows has taken over the MBR

    Well I solved it :D

Turns out that I had left a couple of lines in the /etc/fstab file that said the drive with UUID 398bcef7-834c-40b3-868d-22394dda40c5 was ext3, back before I reformatted it for...

[ubuntu] Re: Windows has taken over the MBR

    Well, a lot has happened.

First, I was getting error 17: Cannot boot from partition. I manually edited the menu.lst file to boot the right drive and right partition, but now I am presented with:

[ubuntu] Re: Windows has taken over the MBR

Another question: Will Windows be on the GRUB boot menu when I restore it or will I have to add it manually?

Super Grub Disk looks like a good option at the moment, so I'll probably try that.

[ubuntu] Windows has taken over the MBR

Hey, yesterday I tried to Dual Boot Windows with Hardy. Hardy was already installed, and had been for a few months, so I used a separate drive for Windows. In an attempt to preserve Ubuntu's GRUB...

Well, fsck fixed it. Thanks for listening guys :P
  19. [ubuntu] Re: Tertiary Hard Drive has gone missing.

'fsck' is currently running, after about an hour of holding the 'y' key, it's finished a secondary check and is asking me to clone blocks with multiple claims. I'm not sure what this means, but I've...

Re: Team Fortress 2 crashes at start

To launch TF2 from the Command Line, you'll need to do:

    cd ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Steam && wine steam -applaunch 440 -dxlevel81

That'll probably fill the terminal with outputs, but if...

Re: Yay first release candidate for wine 1.0!

You can just install over the previous version. No uninstalling or removal necessary, and it'll retain your settings and files.
  23. [ubuntu] Re: Dual boot with XP after Ubuntu is installed.

Reinstalling Ubuntu isn't an option I'm afraid; I've been using this install for about 3 months and don't have another hard drive that can accomodate the data I've collected. I can live without the...
  24. [ubuntu] Dual boot with XP after Ubuntu is installed.
