I don't remember a format option in nautilus.
odd that it won't show up in GParted.
"mkfs" should work to format a partition.
mkfs -t ext3 /dev/sdX1
you can replace "ext3" with another...
right click on any of the fields ("from", "subject", "date", etc) and select "Add a column". Then, drag the "Size" field next to the others.
should do the trick.

the clock and volume control don't sit in the tray, they are on the panel itself.

-right click on panel -> "add to panel" -> "notification area" ->...
the installation CDs are working fine. I've used multiple burners, checked their integrity, and even installed ubuntu on other laptops with them. Even used usbsticks.
It seems to be an issue...
try unclicking "show weather" and "show temperature" under preferences.
add your location
and then reenable those two.

Did you look in the home directory of the live cd or on your computer? (ie... Did you mount the hard drive partition?)

I was installing Ubuntu 8.10 via unetbootin (netinstall) on a laptop also previously running only Ubuntu.
When I boot up the laptop, I get the following error:

depends on what you need the encryption for/against...
in ubuntu 8.10, it's easy to set up a "private" folder that's encrypted on the hard-drive (when the computer is off)......
are you copying to a FAT32 filesystem?
seems to be a common problem on those systems.
