    Re: I mean, why though?

    There are some people who are 100% Microsoft for everything, but being forced to use Linux. The world has all sorts of people.

    [ubuntu] Re: 18.04 can't get ethernet share to work

    Sorry, but I've not tried to use network manager in about a decade. I purge it from all my systems. Does the Ubuntu Desktop Guide not have instructions?
  3. Re: Do I have problems with my drive or motherboard?

    Thanks for that script. I modified it slightly when loop devices and LVM LVs showed up:

    #! /bin/bash
    for disk in `sudo fdisk -l | grep "Disk /dev" \
    | egrep -v '/dev/loop|/dev/mapper' | awk...
  4. [kubuntu] Re: KUbuntu 20.04 in a VM (KVM and Virtualbox)-Screen resolution issue

    Sometimes the answer we seek isn't the answer we need. That was the point for the ssh -X stuff. You don't need a full desktop most of the time, just the program window to be displayed on the local...

    Re: make NFO where its missing from files

    A minimal .NFO file should be this:

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes" ?>
    <movie>
    <title>28 Weeks Later</title>
    </movie>

    I'd make a script that accepts 2 command line...

    Re: make NFO where its missing from files

    Perhaps if you describe the final system you are trying to get the data into, rather than this intermediate step which may not be needed at all, we can better help?

    When I looked at creating a...
  7. Re: Might as well be new, it's been over a decade

    Physically disconnect the current drive if you have bad luck doing installs. It is really easy to make a bad choice and wipe MS-Windows. There are some difficulties this method would cause for...
  8. Re: 10GBASE-T or 2.5GBBASE-T Network Work With Ubuntu 10.04

    10G equipment would be better supported than 2.5Gbps because data centers have had it since 2008-ish. 2.5Gbps seems to be a home/consumer compromised solution.

    But you'll need to find 10 Gbps...

    Re: Samba not working correctly

    Is there a specific reason you limit the clients to NT1?
    There appear to be incorrect users listed in the post above. userids must begin with an alphabetic character. The safe regex for allowed...
  10. [ubuntu] Re: Upgrade advice....previous attempt was terrible

    Just restore from the backup you made prior to the do-release-upgrade run. Systems with lots of non-Canonical packages and many PPAs installed often have failed upgrades. Best to use your...
  11. Re: Do I have problems with my drive or motherboard?

    Probably the disk, but check the SMART data to see how much data loss has already happened. If this is an SSD, you are lucky.
    Smart has 2 steps.

    Run a test. sudo smartctl -t short /dev/sda

    Re: how to login screen

    Ubuntu 12.10 support ended in 2017.

    Move to a supported release. Today, that would be 20.04.
  13. [gnome] Re: No native resolution option in display settings

    Please show the exact xrandr command attempted. The xrandr output showing the modes and connected monitors would be good too. Please.

    I use this on a 1920x1200 monitor with a connect that supports...
  14. Re: xrdp/xorg multiple users on the same session (students/teacher)

    I don't know how to do it with rdp or vnc. Sorry. The problem with VNC and RDP is they have zero security in their connections.

    x2go allows at least 1 "view-only" session...

    [ubuntu] Re: Encrypting Ubuntu - Protecting Assets

    Thanks for posting the location. That information would have been very useful a few days ago. Seems the real issue is just having to walk 200 ft on a cold night. If that is true, I'd just use...
  17. [other] Re: How to install email encryption using chrome

    Have you looked at non-email messaging systems for secured family communications?

    Something like RetroShare or Nextcloud talk or even wormhole just to exchange text files.

    I'm big on not...
  18. [ubuntu] Re: I can't format texts in an email editor or a browser address bar. They disappear

    Dd you do these? Linux is multiuser. Take advantage of that.

    [ubuntu] Re: 18.04 can't get ethernet share to work

    LAN on 18.04 works. Use network manager or netplan to configure it. But that's not the same as turning Ubuntu into a router.
    Routers have more different security requirements than a desktop.

  20. [kubuntu] Re: KUbuntu 20.04 in a VM (KVM and Virtualbox)-Screen resolution issue

    You'll need to modify that line for your system. Both the mode and the output device. On my kvm 20.04 system, this is the line that works:

    xrandr --output Virtual-1 --mode 1680x1050

    I'm on a...
  21. [other] Re: How to install email encryption using chrome

    My biggest concern is trusting browsers. They are extremely complex and often fail to do what they claim to do.

    In my mind, a false sense of privacy is worse than not using encryption at all. At...
  22. [kubuntu] Re: fstab no longer mounting nfs shares at boot

    If the NFS mounts are being attempted before networking is up, they will fail. There are mount options to let the mount subsystem (now systemd.mount) know that the mounts need networking first.

  23. [all variants] Re: the best way to mount disk from device that is on wifi connection

    The best answer is to use a wired ethernet connection. The faster, the better. Everything else is a hack for flaky connections.

    Use rsync for a protocol that picks up quickly after failures....
  24. [kubuntu] Re: KUbuntu 20.04 in a VM (KVM and Virtualbox)-Screen resolution issue

    For Virtualbox, use the guest additions for a more seamless integration.

    For KVM/libvirt, be certain to choose QXL drivers and the spice protocol. This works for local and remote virt-viewer...

    [ubuntu] Re: 18.04 can't get ethernet share to work

    Can you describe the topology? Maybe there is a different term that will click so we can help besides suggesting setting up the "server" as a router.
