    Seems like your gnome-settings-daemon is working fine. Have you tried restarting though? It's always fixed it when I have this problem.

    Is this on the graphical CD? It should have Whole-disk and dual-boot.
    You can always plug it into another computer to save data.

    The simplest way is to install Ubuntu which will then set up the Grub boot manager. This lets you switch between Windows and Ubuntu at startup.
