Try installing Steam through Playonlinux. Its working for me but I am using Precise 32 bit.

can you post your save file somehow and maybe someone will be able to get past that section.

Do you know anyone else with this game? If so send them your save files and see if they can get past the error and resave for you.

You should be able to download debootstrap from http://packages.ubuntu.com/

and then when you setup the chroot environment you can change the package sources to your local cdrom in theory.
