Re: Can't connect to wireless 5G broadband

    Yes, it can be confusing.

Normally, 5G broadband would be from the router to the ISP. Issues with this connection are an ISP phone call. If the laptop has a 5G connection, it isn't to the...
  2. [ubuntu] Re: Unable to perform "do-release-upgrade" from 16.04 to 18.04 - No errors

Many things have changed in 18.04, so you will need to reconfigure those anyway. New versions of apache, mariadb, samba, CUPS, different DEs with different config, no more ifupdown - netplan is the...

    Re: Backup plan

Which is part of the reason that I just do a fresh install, restore data, /home/, specific system settings (not FSTAB or BOOT anything!), then feed a list of manually installed programs (apt-mark) in...
  4. [lubuntu] Re: How to use lvm to reduce size of root partition

boot from Try Ubuntu, install LVMtools, if needed, activate the VGs, then resize any LV you like. Probably want to make the swap LV 4.1G while you are there.

    Re: issues with new install/winehq/password

Native Linux apps don't need/cannot use WINE.
Iíve only run an AV on Linux when required to do so by a contract. It never found anything, ever.

For someone really new to Linux, a quick get...

Re: internet services - i'm curious

Pretty common. Home ISP and whatever cell data plan they have. Both will fail after 4-12 hrs during region-wide disasters. Heck, my cable ISP can't handle a 2 min power outage without needing to...
  9. [ubuntu] Re: Unable to perform "do-release-upgrade" from 16.04 to 18.04 - No errors

The do-release-upgrade didn't change the repositories. Perhaps it didn't disable all the PPAs in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/.
You can manually do both of those, then run

    sudo apt update
    sudo apt...

Re: Can't connect to wireless 5G broadband

Please clarify if you mean 5G broadband or 5.8 Ghz WiFi. We don't have any 5G broadband available here, only 4G. Do they make routers with 5G wireless already?

I suspect nobody can help with 5G...

    Re: Copy/paste, unable to install

Yep, KODI demands direct access to the GPU and needs a specific openGL level to work. Had an old Via C6 CPU that didn't have support for a high enough opengl version. Wanted to use it as a media...
  12. Re: Suggestion: Versioning the apt-installed packages-tree

    Don't think git works automatically.

I have that. It is called "a versioned backup." Very handy for all sorts of things, not just accidentally removed, corrupted, files.

    People want to invent...
  13. [ubuntu] Re: How to use my own manually installed Python instead of the default one from repo?

what OS version are you on?
    which python is being used?
    which pyenv is being used?

Has pyenv been setup correctly and initialized?

I did something like this last month and don't remember any...
  14. [ubuntu] Re: Partitions - take from Windows and give to Linux

IDK. Lenovo probably installed some stuff on the storage and moving those may break them.
    You have this:

    $ sudo fdisk -l
Device Start End Sectors Size Type
    /dev/sda1 ...

    [ubuntu] Re: Suggestions on recovery

Dude 8.04 support ended over 5 yrs ago. At this point, for a business, new hardware is necessary to get HW support contracts.

Backup whatever data you can and move to a supported release. To do...

[server] Re: Server Load Going Through the Roof

  17. Re: Is file synchronization another source of error?

    VERSIONED backups.

If we only do clone or mirror backups, then we are screwed. OTOH, if you have 180 days of daily, versioned, backups, then any corruption should show up as differences in each...
  18. [ubuntu] Re: How to use my own manually installed Python instead of the default one from repo?

You created the bug by not leaving the system python alone. Put it back they way it was.

The best practice is to leave the system python for all system needs and use a tool like pyenv to manage...
  19. Re: Is file synchronization another source of error?

    yes.

Anything that continuously syncs files between systems can be corrupted when a change causing corruption happens on any of the systems.

The only mitigation for this issue is versioned...
  20. [SOLVED] Re: How to install the Mpeg-4 and H.264 decoders? [Pop OS]

On Linux, codecs aren't installed like on Windows.

Decoder? mpv or vlc? Maybe look for media players.

Those are players with the codecs for anything you should want to see built in.
    mpv has...
  21. [ubuntu] Re: Various thigs tried - Error opening directory '/media': Permission denied

  22. [ubuntu] Re: Various thigs tried - Error opening directory '/media': Permission denied

    aljames2,

Just curious, how is this working? Did the restore go as smooth as you'd like?
