I am embarrased to say that it is just me being too -unclever- sometimes, especially when something doesn't work.
well the file was not deleted, it was still there, after renaming the file to latin...

My problem is as follows
I installed Ubuntu using Hongkong locale - so I can use chinese input with scim without all that trouble.
well didn't work after all, so i installed UIM which worked but...

i have a similar problem
however
i found a solution on the web like this:
open the Volume control(top panel - the little speaker thing - at least in my case )
click: edit - preferences
scroll...

if your comp specs are too low AND you are running GNOME I wouldnt really recommend kompose
I use it under KDE and I like it a lot

BUT under GNOME it becomes SUPER slow

kinda takes the fun...
