KPackageKIT doesn't respect dpkg hold, or even aptitute hold.
It will recognize pinning from APT, though. Check out this how to for APT pinning.

the files you need to edit are in /etc/dansguardian/lists
comment out everything in these two lists, by placing a "#" in front of every line that doesn't have one.

That "export AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit" thing worked. Didn't need the java line though.
