    Re: GUI for this?

People coming from Windows often don't understand the power that plain text can bring to data like this. It is a different way of thinking because they haven't been exposed to the 100+ little text...
  2. Re: "Too many primary partitions" when installing with pre-seed - 18.04 desktop

Or it could be the 15 other commands at the top which setup the base for partitioning?
As you say, partman may not support it for auto-partitioning, but GPT has been supported since at least 2012,...
  3. Re: "Too many primary partitions" when installing with pre-seed - 18.04 desktop

Heck, until 20.04, I found setting up LVM during installation too much hassle. The 20.04 installer is 100x better - I almost cried. Perhaps in another 10 yrs, it will get to the level that CentOS had...

    Re: Help with networking server

Less describing what you believe and please post command output proving what you believe. Wrap all commands with any options used AND output in "code tags" so it is readable here, columns line up. ...
  5. Re: "Too many primary partitions" when installing with pre-seed - 18.04 desktop

I just know that MBR/MSDOS partitions have limitation that are a hassle and that GPT doesn't. I've never done partman anything stuff. You have me thinking, if it is easy for partitioning, it would be...

Re: Suggestion to protect my sistem

No, not typically. Just have daily, versioned, backups and don't allow physical access to anyone untrusted. Every different user should have their own account with their own password. This way, they...
  7. Re: External HDD (LUKS Encrypted) Will it work on another Ubuntu Installation.

    Short answer
LUKS is portable. The auto-mounting may need some setup, but it does work.

    Longer
I've had LUKS on external disks for years. Whenever those external disks get connected to other...

    Re: Help with networking server

    a) servers have static IPs. No need for network-manager. Don't. Just don't. Don't use DHCP.
    b) to work on servers from remote locations, use ssh. If going over the internet, never use passwords,...
  9. Re: "Too many primary partitions" when installing with pre-seed - 18.04 desktop

Use GPT partition table, not MSDOS. GPT supports at least 100 primary partitions and none of that extended-primary + logical partition crap.

Re: VMWare player not working with XUbuntu

So, if you aren't an expert, having multiple hypervisors installed or partially installed, is bad. virtualbox is a hypervisor. VMWare Player is a different hypervisor. Don't attempt to have both...
  11. [SOLVED] Re: Value of reserved blocks is sometimes changed

[QUOTE=raleigh3;13978913]Does this refer to my 2 Tbytes of space on my hard drive or the reserved blocks being used up?

Re-read #9 above. It is about full file systems. That's what df and df -i...

Which is a flaw with Windows. Inside APT, all packages are treated equally and get updated together, provided the files weren't manually downloaded and manually installed. But, if you stay within...
  13. [ubuntu] Re: Excessive hard drive activity after upgrade to Ubuntu 20.04

That just cleaned a little storage, not anything related to being slow or using RAM.

With all the snap packages on the system, there may be 3 copies of each. To see all the snap packages,...

Re: VMWare player not working with XUbuntu

End users typically use virtualbox for VMs on Linux.
Admins typically use KVM + virt-manager for VMs.

There is a Virtualization subforum here for virtualization questions, btw.

    Re: Ubuntu network settings question....

Linux isn't Windows. Only about 20% of the ideas apply.
The easiest firewall interface, is gufw. The firewall itself is built into the kernel.

If you want other systems to have access, you'll...

synaptic? If it isn't installed already, install it.
Some might be snaps. Doubt any apt tool will show snap package installs.

xubuntu should have some sort of software management tool. I haven't...
  17. [ubuntu] Re: Excessive hard drive activity after upgrade to Ubuntu 20.04

Bloated browsers, all of them, but not using software installed via snap packages will help.

I mentioned the cpu more to recommend dumping gnome3, not any upgrade. xfce, mate, kde, lxqt are all...
  18. [ubuntu] Re: Looking to build an NVR/VMS and need advice on selected hardware compatability

I have a ASUS ROG STRIX B450-F GAMING running 16.04. Once I got the memory timings via xmp correct - had to OC to get the 3200Mhz - it has been rock solid. Also, it has an onboard intel i211 NIC -...

[ubuntu] Re: New 20.04 LTS Install Questions

Would you consider using a virtual machine install? There are lots of good reasons to run that way. It is less risk and has fewer problems when MSFT decides to update stuff. The downsides exist,...

    Re: Failing to upgrade systemd

I'd look through the syslog and dmesg output for errors and warnings. Depending on those, I'd try to fix any related to the packaging system or failing storage. I always suspect failing storage -...
  23. [SOLVED] Re: Urgent: black screen upon boot after restarts, probable firmware issue

  24. [ubuntu] Re: Excessive hard drive activity after upgrade to Ubuntu 20.04

  25. [ubuntu] Re: Excessive hard drive activity after upgrade to Ubuntu 20.04

You got the 'code tags' perfect. Thanks. Very readable.

Here's what my first look at the data (may need to come back for more details) has me looking at more closely:
