Paraphrasing the final scene of Revenge of the Nerds:
"I'm a noob. And I'm pretty proud of it."

So you're saying I'm a noob? ;)
Thanks!
I've got a question about conky (and I didn't know where else to put this question and I didn't want to start a new thread)...
I have it installed and when I run it from the terminal it loads fine...

From what you've described this is all you need (with the gallery mod, of course)
OT: I was vote number 666
You might want to try another network manager. If you've gone through Jamie Jackson's how to and still can't connect, it's worth a shot. I installed wifiradar after going through that how to and it...
I just checked the outcome of that site and its different than the default gateway but you can try using it. It won't break anything.
Did you try a manual configuration for the wireless connection instead of the AutoDHCP?
Yes, good call. It's always good to have options.
Okay... since that's the case, I would suggest you follow this How To:

You'll need to know what kind of card it is.
You want to have downloaded the desktop version (the top choice in the top section) and the "Standard Personal Computer" option in the second section (the top choice in the second section).
Is...
The default gateway is the IP address the rest of the internet would see. The stuff you're listing is all "private" IP addressing for the router.
That 192.168.1.1 is actually the router's...
I would suggest trying another network manager. I got it to work with wifiradar after having similar issues with WICD.
We're treading in an area I'm not very well versed in (I'm a newbie too, I just happened to get this to work).
Did you download the 64 bit version?
Nothing comes up after PCI (sysfs)? That's usually just a little message telling you that stuff is being looked up.
You might have some deeper problems that I can't help you with if you don't get...
If you can find out the default gateway IP address, you should be able to manually configure the connection. You'll need the IP address that shows up under that "avahi" thing and the default gateway...
Log into the router and manually assign the IP address to your laptop.
I'm definitely seeing a trend here. The whole DHCP exchange is spotty at best. It's a crap shoot.
Awesome!
When you get back, make sure to mark this thread solved so people can search for solved issues easier.
Try forcing the connection first. If that works, you can worry about going to other places later. If it doesn't work, you won't be able to get it to work anywhere right now because the issue hasn't...
This is gonna suck but if you can post the output of:
sudo lshw -C network
... that will help with troubleshooting.
EDIT: It will really really help if you get an ethernet cable and plug...
I had responded to you before but the db crashed.
Anyway, you need to do a couple of things.
First, find out the default gateway IP address for the router. (Usually, you have to be able to log...
Instead of autoDHCP, try to manually configure the connection.
Are you dual booting? If so, can you find out which IP address your router has assigned to the connection when you were using...
