I've had the same problems with the 9000 Pro in a Sawtooth. Looks like KMS and Power Macs with 9000s don't play well together.
radeon.modeset=0 should've worked to give you a screen. The parameter "nomodeset" achieves the same thing, so type in "Linux nomodeset" with no other parameters and see what happens.
