[SOLVED] Re: Is it safe to remove these files?

Is it safe? In my painful experience: no. When you get an autoremove list as big as you have, something has gone seriously wrong. You've apparently removed something else before which has broken a...
  2. .xsession-errors: battery state messages are getting out of hand

My $HOME/.xsession-errors file keeps growing in size, and most of what's in there is garbage.
It logs what going on during a boot and a shutdown or a logout/login or a reboot, which is fine and...
  3. Re: Looking for creative ways to reduce disk space occupied by system folders

Why do you have 3.1G in /opt? These days it's normally empty. Special programs? And the 3.3G in /var makes me suspect you have enormous logfiles lying around.
  4. [SOLVED] Re: How can I prevent third-party apps from accessing my personal files ?

Change the permissions in your $HOME directory tree. If you remove all rights from "group" and "others" using chmod, no one except yourself can look at the directories and files. This may bring other...

Re: Ubuntu 20LTS stalls in installation

If you have a partial boot without the USB-stick, try again.
    From my link:
"If your system doesn’t show the grub screen, press and hold shift key at boot. In some systems, pressing the Esc key...

Re: Ubuntu 20LTS stalls in installation

AER is "advanced error reporting" which fits with the gazillion messages you get.

    Perhaps this can help?

    Otherwise I suspect WLAN is...
  7. [lubuntu] Re: New to Lubuntu, question about docx and increasing size of things

Concerning backups: you actually need two:
One for backing up all your system setups and configurations.
A second one for backing up your stuff in your /home directory structure.

    Why two? Well...
  8. [lubuntu] Re: New to Lubuntu, question about docx and increasing size of things

That's also what I thought until I started playing with CAD programs. I had to increase my / partition to 30 GB. But that's more of an exception, I guess.
  9. [lubuntu] Re: New to Lubuntu, question about docx and increasing size of things

    ^^^ This.

DON'T fiddle with where programs and associated files are located, leave this up to Muon, sudo apt-get install and your PPAs. Otherwise you'll have to do a complete reinstall very soon...

Re: Ubuntu 20LTS stalls in installation

Probably not, as the WLAN circuit will still be active and demand a driver. If you have the option, turn it off in the BIOS. You can always turn it back on later.
  11. [lubuntu] Re: New to Lubuntu, question about docx and increasing size of things

The "software store" is the Muon package manager. That's the place to start

[ubuntu_studio] Re: dual boot misbehavior Lenovo T450

First: Hibernate is not installed in Ubuntu, you'll need to set it up.
But do you really mean "hibernate"? This usually means pressing the power button when resuming (hibernate is suspend to disk...

    [ubuntu] Re: Stop update checking

Just remove snapd, it won't hurt and it does a lot of good. The idea behind snaps is flawed IMHO.
You might encounter an application or two that only install as snaps. Consider if you really need...
  15. [lubuntu] Re: New to Lubuntu, question about docx and increasing size of things

    Yes, welcome.

1: Concerning .docx: what CelticWarrior said. With exporting .pdfs there have been issues and a bug report exists. Mine works fine, though. With Mendeley I can't help.

    2: Desktop...

Re: Ubuntu 20LTS stalls in installation

To me, there are so many problems here that I'd suggest a more radical approach.

1: The i3 CPU is a bit lightweight for a Ubuntu install, I'd go for one of the lighter distros. Personally I'm...

Re: Ubuntu 20LTS stalls in installation

It's not clear how far you get in the install.
1: do you get to the DOS-like F2/F3 select language/keyboard screen?
2: do you get to the "Start/Try Ubuntu screen?
3: do you get to the Ubuntu...
  19. [SOLVED] Re: Upgrade to 20.04 damages pdf export from LibreOffice

You know, thinking back I did have a problem with LO after upgrading from 19.10 to 20.04. Don't remember exactly what it was, but it was glaring.
I did a reinstall of LO and then everything was...

    Re: Slow boot older machine

The suggestion of upgrading the BIOS is an act of pure desperation when everything else has failed.

I've never really seen an issue with a BIOS. The BIOS is firmware, meaning you should see it as...

    Quite frankly, don't go there.
If it fails, you'll just have a bricked machine and there's NO support to be found for a 12+ years old laptop.

    Re: Slow boot older machine

I'm using a hp6910p, which is practically the same except for the display size (6910: 14.1", 6710: 15.4").

Tried Ubuntu, but it's too heavy for the machine.
I switched to Lubuntu, which runs...

I don't understand why you keep hanging on to Ubuntu/Gnome, then. Try one of the other flavors. A live boot takes a few minutes.
