[ubuntu] Re: Amazon mp3 downloader conflict

ditto on pymazon - downloaded and works great (and you don't have to do the Linux dep dance) -- one annoying thing though: it downloads all the files scattered into one directory - not politely into...

[ubuntu] Re: USB install is wrong

thanks to all who pointed me to the simple and easy
    Synaptic grub-pc install
although finding the right kernel and Broadcom wireless driver combination took a while after that
    thanks again!

[ubuntu] Re: USB install is wrong

    I did a grub-install -v

which is how I found out I was running a legacy version

and no I didn't do anything wrong on the install

since IIRC the Ubuntu install for 10.10 doesn't give you any...

    [ubuntu] USB install is wrong

I wanted to do a clean install of 10.10 on my Dell netbook (SSD drive and no DVD or CD drive) so I made a LiveUSB by selecting '10.10_Live' using UNetbootin on the 10.04 system running on the...

[ubuntu] Re: upgrade 7.04 to 10.04

the link in Irv's post stated:
'5. Pick old / partition, set it to be this install's /, and UNCHECK THE "FORMAT" CHECKBOX. This is key.'
I had reformatted the '/' partition and was wondering why...

[ubuntu] Re: Wifi not connecting after 10.04 upgrade...

if for some reason you lose connectivity after updating to 10.04
    do this:
plug in via ethernet to the back of your router
    go to System/Administration/Hardware Drivers
    uninstall the WiFi driver...
  7. Re: HOW TO: Change Ubuntu 10.04 WM buttons to 9.10 placement/order

also, check out the new Ubuntu Tweak -- apparently, from what I've heard, they address the button placement issue and made it fairly easy to correct in the new version...

  8. Re: HOW TO: Change Ubuntu 10.04 WM buttons to 9.10 placement/order

the logic of new users being frustrated with default settings is weak
so I agree it is pointless to continue this discussion
but if you want to get your knickers in a twist about button placement...
  9. Re: HOW TO: Change Ubuntu 10.04 WM buttons to 9.10 placement/order

    I wasn't referring to you
I meant the new user who comes to Ubuntu from another OS
Ubuntu is getting dumbed-down enough to be able to reach more people
I just don't want to see this trend continue...
  10. Re: HOW TO: Change Ubuntu 10.04 WM buttons to 9.10 placement/order

true...easy enough to Google and fix though...
and gconf editor does comes with Ubuntu IIRC
  11. Re: HOW TO: Change Ubuntu 10.04 WM buttons to 9.10 placement/order

when a new user comes to Ubuntu she will have no past version to compare their experience with hence these issues will be of less concern to them

unless they are coming from XP or W7 (buttons on...
  12. Re: HOW TO: Change Ubuntu 10.04 WM buttons to 9.10 placement/order

that being said though, I do agree with you both in that out-of-the-box 10.04 is fugly and carries many dumb design decisions

    :)
  13. Re: HOW TO: Change Ubuntu 10.04 WM buttons to 9.10 placement/order

being able to customize everything is not a 'feature', it is a core aspect of why most people use Linux

and if you don't know this about Linux then maybe you should use another OS that is more...
  14. Re: HOW TO: Change Ubuntu 10.04 WM buttons to 9.10 placement/order

these are non-issues if you keep your '/home' and '/' directories on separate partitions
I do a clean install onto my '/' part
then reinstall all my apps using
    sudo dpkg --set-selections...
  15. Re: HOW TO: Change Ubuntu 10.04 WM buttons to 9.10 placement/order

then I would suggest using an OS that can't be changed easily under-the-hood...the great thing about Linux is that you can customize everything about it to your liking by using tools like gconf...
  16. Re: HOW TO: Change Ubuntu 10.04 WM buttons to 9.10 placement/order

the beautiful thing about Linux is that you can set up things as you like them...
there is no need to settle for what aesthetically challenged software managers hoist onto the public ;)
  17. Re: HOW TO: Change Ubuntu 10.04 WM buttons to 9.10 placement/order

Tweak and gfconfig are just front ends for what's 'under the hood' - you could also make these tweaks using the command line

[ubuntu] Re: problems displaying contents of trash

I haven't had trouble (yet) emptying the trash

and the same thing happens when trying to view the contents of another dir over samba

[ubuntu] problems displaying contents of trash

I'm on Ubuntu 9.04 running an older kernel: 2.6.28.14 generic

    [ubuntu] Adobe Flash Installer

OK so I've had this problem with Flash content that I was too lazy to resolve:
I couldn't play back certain flash content at all
some YouTube, no Vimeo, and other content also seldom if ever worked...
  23. [ubuntu] Re: Why won't some flash movies play back in Firefox?

    //sudo apt-get remove mozilla-plugin-gnash

it seems gnash was installed on your system

also, I tried your fix and wasn't able to play Vimeo content or anything from Comedy Central

    :(

Re: What is the best local backup utility?

there is a root and non-root version
that shows up in 'Applications/System Tools' after an install
I always use the root version
  25. [ubuntu] Re: Why won't some flash movies play back in Firefox?

if you are using Gnash they report a change in Flash content as breaking the latest version...
for example YouTube works but Vimeo doesn't
