[all variants] Re: Looking for a Paint Program

Kolourpaint is the closest you'll get to the the classic MS Paint.
  2. [lubuntu] Re: Copying system setup from on machine to another?

    Thank You.
I have no aliases or anything like that, my machines are relatively simple.

I just wanted to avoid the hassle of reinstalling and reconfiguring everything, and that worked extremely...
  3. [lubuntu] Re: Copying system setup from on machine to another?

    First, let me report success!!!

The scenario was to set up a "new" HW-identical laptop as an existing one, with new UUIDs, users etc., but to avoid reinstalling programs and program settings. This...
  4. [ubuntu] Re: How do I get access to the Parallel port input and using bash scripts?

Is this an ECP port? Rare as hen's teeth nowadays.
  5. [lubuntu] Re: Copying system setup from on machine to another?

    @guiverc, 1000 Thanks.
I was not aware of /etc/shadow and it seems very likely that that's part of my problem.

    I'll try that tonight.
  6. [lubuntu] Re: Copying system setup from on machine to another?

    Apparently, I expressed myself badly.
I have /home fully under control and I do not want to copy it (it's on a separate partition, BTW).

I want to copy / to a new machine to create an identical...
  7. [lubuntu] Copying system setup from on machine to another?

I have two HW-wise identical laptops (HDD size and RAM size differ).

I'm trying to make two identical machines SW-wise. One is already running perfectly, the other has a base 20.04 install which...
  8. [lubuntu] Re: Can't boot Lubuntu 20.04 after installation

How do you partition your disk during installation?
  9. [lubuntu] Re: Problem when using USB-sticks. They kill KDE-Partmgr. and File mngr. (20.04)

You may right that the problem is my failure to work with the KDE Manager.
But that doesn't explain why the File Manager (PCManFM-Qt) gets killed as well.
  10. [lubuntu] Re: Problem when using USB-sticks. They kill KDE-Partmgr. and File mngr. (20.04)

I think I just solved it myself.
Apparently, the USB-stick was marked as "encrypted" somehow (dunno why?).
Installed Gparted, which indicated this, and I was able to resolve the issue.

    KDE...
  11. [lubuntu] Problem when using USB-sticks. They kill KDE-Partmgr. and File mngr. (20.04)

On one of my laptops I've run into the following problem:

When inserting a USB-stick (FAT32 formatted), it is recognized perfectly.
With KDE Partition Manager, I then wish to set it up as an...
  12. [lubuntu] Customizing Lubuntu 20.xx after a new install as newbie

I'm a Lubuntu user since 1 1/2 years and love it, but have run through a lot of issues and a lot of reinstalls, basically all due to my own ignorance and incompetence.

    So, I've composed a little...
  13. [all variants] Re: WARNING: Banning "other" from $HOME: Don't do it like I did!

This is very dependent on the working environment.
I use Group membership to temporarily allow access from one user to another or vice versa. Instead of carrying USB-thumbs back and forth.
  14. [all variants] Re: WARNING: Banning "other" from $HOME: Don't do it like I did!

    Deleted/misunderstood. Sorry.
  15. [all variants] Re: WARNING: Banning "other" from $HOME: Don't do it like I did!

    My Apologies!!
After a detailed analysis, I've found out that the removal of the "other" permissions is NOT the culprit.
Rather, it's messy ownership of some of the directories, where not every...
  16. [all variants] Re: WARNING: Banning "other" from $HOME: Don't do it like I did!

No, the problem is that I messed up the permissons on the hidden files.
  17. [all variants] WARNING: Banning "other" from $HOME: Don't do it like I did!

In another thread, I asked about the implications/ramifications of removing "other" rights from the $HOME directories.

    https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2460569

    This has turned out to...

Re: LUbuntu.net outdated / broken links

    lubuntu.me is the official site.
    lubuntu.net is a cybersquatter. Don't go there.
  19. [lubuntu] Add New User - settings in /etc/adduser.conf don't work?

As a follow-up to my thread about banning "other" from the $HOME directories:
    https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2460569
and the announcement from discourse.ubuntu.com in the same thread:...
  20. Re: Ban "other" from $HOME and subdirs - Good or Bad Idea?

You've lost me bit here, but the discussion is interesting.

For /home everything is default. For $HOME only x is set for "other". No read permission. For all subdirs to $HOME "other" has no rights...
  21. Re: Ban "other" from $HOME and subdirs - Good or Bad Idea?

    Good call!
I've tested it. Every $HOME should have the "x" attribute set for "other". Anything below that should have rwx "other" attributes cleared, with one exception: .face.icon must have read...
  22. Re: Ban "other" from $HOME and subdirs - Good or Bad Idea?

Interesting reading, Thank You @deadflowr for the link.
  23. Re: Ban "other" from $HOME and subdirs - Good or Bad Idea?

OK, just ran into a minor issue. The "icon.png" for the user login needs to be set as "read" for "other" in $HOME. No big deal...

Also, do not remove "other" from $HOME, but only the subdirs and...
  24. Re: Ban "other" from $HOME and subdirs - Good or Bad Idea?

Really? I feel good now :)

    Thanks, CatKiller.
  25. Ban "other" from $HOME and subdirs - Good or Bad Idea?

I have changed the ownerships of $HOME and subdirectories to only have default "owner" and "group" permissions using the following command:

    ~$ chmod o-rwx -R ./* ./.[!.]*

    Can this...
