Sillly me! @Sandyd's solution is just right! I had to uncomment (erase the #) the line for it to work! So to summarize:

@sandyd, you were right in that /etc/systemd/logind.conf said HandleLidSwitch=suspend. I changed it to hibernate. No change, it keeps suspending on lid close.
