    Re: Howto make USB boot drives

    @C.S.Cameron,

    I have access to various computers for testing. In UEFI mode all of them can boot most Linux systems when extracted to a FAT32 partition. The same is true for the Windows installer,...
  2. Re: How to limit LiveCD persistency to home/data only and have an immutable system?

    If you first loop mount the iso file, then casper/filesystem.squashfs in the iso file, you will find /home. I guess you have extracted all this, so it should be possible to put some files in the home...
  3. Re: How to limit LiveCD persistency to home/data only and have an immutable system?

    Wifi settings belongs to the system, and you would have to store the relevant file(s) in your home and copy files to where they belong in the system for this to happen. Maybe not easy, but should be...
  4. Re: How to limit LiveCD persistency to home/data only and have an immutable system?

    General description

    It works for with the standard user to have only home-rw (and not writable alias casper-rw).

    $ sudo parted -s "/dev/sdc" print
    Model: OCZ-AGIL ITY3 (scsi)
    Disk /dev/sdc:...

    Re: Howto make USB boot drives

    @dezintop,

    Yes, you are welcome to try it. I did some similar tests in VirtualBox (long ago) so I would think it will work, but I have never used vmware.

    Please let us know how it works for you...
  6. Re: How to limit LiveCD persistency to home/data only and have an immutable system?

    Try by changing the label 'writable' to 'home-rw' for the ext4 partition.

    Re: Howto make USB boot drives

    @oygle,

    I'm glad you found a way to run FreeDOS. But I think there is an easier way:

    Download FD12FULL.zip from

    www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-stuff/freedos/files/distributions/1.2/

    Extract...

    @ kansasnoob,

    It would be interesting to know if any of the suggested workarounds (that work for the old HPs with c2d CPUs) will work for your old Dells. I think DVD or persistent live drive made...
  12. [all variants] Re: Call for testing the current daily Groovy iso files

    @guiverc,

    1. I think your tests with the current Ubuntu Groovy iso file are enough for this purpose.

    2. This is another test, that you should do with an iso file that makes the USB drive...
  13. [all variants] Re: Call for testing the current daily Groovy iso files

    If I understand correctly, you tested Lubuntu, but I think the latest and greatest boot structure suggested by Thomas Schmitt is only present in Ubuntu, the current Groovy iso file '20201013.1' in...
  14. [all variants] Re: Call for testing the current daily Groovy iso files

    I'm glad you found this before the release of Groovy.

    So now there are problems not only with old HPs but also old Dells, and you can add more heat to the bug report #1899308

    Please be sure to...
  15. [all variants] Re: Call for testing the current daily Groovy iso files

    This should be independent of the boot structure of the iso files, so I think: Yes.

    If you fail, you are probably affected by another [new?] bug.

    @ EuclideanCoffee,

    Thanks, this shows how it works with disk encryption. Not like in an unencrypted system :-)

    [ubuntu] Re: Ubuntu 20.10 Beta: Encrypted Swap?

    I have not tested ZFS yet, but I suggest that you check if it works well also with ZFS with a swap file in the root partition (instead of a swap partition). Swap file is the default since a few years...
  18. [all variants] Re: Call for testing the current daily Groovy iso files

    I think you did the things correctly. But your old HPs are stubborn.

    Please try also with the current daily Ubuntu Desktop iso file,

  19. [all variants] Re: Call for testing the current daily Groovy iso files

    When booting, the BIOS/UEFI system decides in which mode it should boot. If a drive can boot in both modes, you can probably set a preferred mode (in some BIOS/UEFI systems).

    When cloning with dd...

    I'm glad the you have no problem to boot into the USB drive.

    Bad bugs are still affecting Groovy. You can find lists of them, when you browse to the ISO testing tracker and look at...

    A problem with the current Groovy iso files, when cloned to USB drives

    I have VBox in standard Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS. There are no guest additions. VBox is booted from the current Ubuntu Groovy iso file (seen as a virtual optical device).

    I'm sorry that you have no convenient whole image backup, but I'm glad that you have good backups of your data files. So just look for the most recent [personal] data files and back them up too.

  25. [SOLVED] Re: Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS Seems To Have Failed????? Help - URGENT

    - The method that is best is to restore from the backup that you made just before heading into the upgrading adventure.

    - The second best alternative is to use an older backup (if you have no...
