Sounds like a configuration issue. could you plug in a USB? mouse and see what you get ?
if this works fine, then there is some setting for the trackpad you would need to look into

I found the Ubuntu version 18.04 lts didnt work as it didnt have touchpad drivers (or not configured) so I tried 18.10 and the drivers worked out of the box.

Ok so what you are saying is that along as I perform a straight install off the Ubuntu CD and then take the hard drive out after rebooting then it should work ?

I used the following mencoder settings (in a bash script) to encode all films.

It did take a while though to do but quality was not too bad at all.

mencoder -vf scale=720:576 -ovc xvid...

I would say go with converting them to Xvid.

The reason for this is that even in windows Xvid is quite well supported now (Win 7 supports this out of the box).

I had films in various formats...

This latest script is now updated and complete as far as I can go (I am not a developer).
