    Re: grub corrupted

You have mixed BIOS & UEFI which on one drive cannot be done.

Windows requires BIOS boot on MBR partitioned drives.
Windows requires UEFI boot on gpt partitioned drives.
    Ubuntu does let you...
  2. [ubuntu] Re: Boot problems, corrupted files or faulty GRUB

Do not know LVM nor Server installs.

But if cloning, you cannot keep both drives plugged in. Duplicate UUID/GUIDs are not allowed. If you want to keep both drives, you have to edit all UUIDs on...

Re: Win 7 Ubuntu 18.04 dual boot UEFI

My older notes had Sony with HP as one that modified UEFI to only boot Windows by description. That is not allowed per UEFI standard, but that is what you have. Only valid description is "Windows...
  4. Re: boot problems with multiple drives (boot-repair link included)

New install is LVM? Is it also encrypted?

I do not know LVM, but you may have to install drivers for LVM and encrypted partitions to be seen and load grub drivers (.mod) for grub to boot your LVM...

Re: Win 7 Ubuntu 18.04 dual boot UEFI

It looks like you have a standard UEFI install of Ubuntu, but are missing the ubuntu entry in UEFI.
    sudo efibootmgr -v

    Line 682 from report:

    =================== efibootmgr -v

Re: Boot Loader settings for Win 10

I missed that you were not installing to the MSI system again.

Better to install Lubuntu or other lightweight version to a lightweight tablet type system.
    Light weight flavors
    Lubuntu, xubuntu,...
  7. Re: boot problems with multiple drives (boot-repair link included)

I missed that you installed in UEFI boot mode to a MBR(msdos) partitioned drive. That still should work, but is not recommended.
Best to always use gpt and have an ESP on every drive. Ubiquity will...
  8. Re: boot problems with multiple drives (boot-repair link included)

It looks like you have UEFI boot of both Windows & Ubuntu.
But have old BIOS boot loaders in MBRs of the old drives. Do not boot in BIOS mode. Make sure UEFI has UEFI boot, often better as UEFI...
  9. [xubuntu] Re: Why did Ubuntu just try to switch me to UEFI Secure Boot?

Back with BIOS, you could not change any settings from the operating system.

But with UEFI, many or most settings can be changed with software.
Now you also can update UEFI from Windows and some...

Re: Boot Loader settings for Win 10

You manual says, this, so it is UEFI:

Almost all systems are UEFI since 2012 as Microsoft has required Windows to be installed in UEFI/gpt boot mode. Users still can install in BIOS/Legacy, but...
  11. [xubuntu] Re: Why did Ubuntu just try to switch me to UEFI Secure Boot?

The only real issue on NTFS for data (only) is Windows fast start up. And Windows will keep turning it on with updates which then locks up NTFS partitions. It sets hibernation flag and when that is...

Re: Bootable USB and Grub2 dual boot

I really recommend USB3, but all my USB3 flash drives are large & I only wanted focal on this one. But it is sloooow.

Model: USB 2.0 USB Flash Drive (scsi)
    Disk /dev/sdb: 4052MB
    Sector size...

Re: Bootable USB and Grub2 dual boot

All the links work for me.

A few ISO are not configured to boot using grub2's loopmount. So then you have to at least extract kernel & initrd files to boot. I had to do that with Puppy years ago,...
  14. [ubuntu] Re: Booting issues - [Boot-info link included]

    What boot error?
You have to press Escape key right after UEFI screen to get grub menu, since you only have one install. Were you able to boot recovery mode?
Or UEFI one time boot key to see UEFI...
  15. [xubuntu] Re: Why did Ubuntu just try to switch me to UEFI Secure Boot?

Did you have a MBR(msdos) partitioned drive, but UEFI install?
Ubuntu lets you do that and probably should not.

Windows only installs to gpt partitioned drives with UEFI.
    Windows only installs...

So moved to Other Linux support since not an official Ubuntu flavor.

Re: Boot Loader settings for Win 10

Only use Linux tools for Linux.
    Windows cannot create Linux partitions.

Also best not to use FAT32 for any larger partition. It is used for a small ESP for UEFI boot systems.
    FAT32 cannot store...

Re: Boot Loader settings for Win 10

If you still have Windows 7, but installed Windows 10, your Windows 10 boot files are probably in the Windows 7 partition and BCD was updated to have both Windows 7 & Windows 10.
    With Windows 10 you...
  19. Re: help moving linux boot partition to its own disk

I prefer to have an ESP on every drive, even though Ubiquity will only install grub to the first drive seen, usually sda or first NVMe drive.

Your ESP controls which Ubuntu install it will boot....

Re: Tyring to install a 4TB hdd, problems.

If using an old copy of fdisk, it is not gpt aware and may make MBR partitions which will limit drive to 2TiB.
Before you needed to use parted, gparted, or gdisk for gpt.
    I used gparted back in...
  21. Re: Upgrading windows 7 to windows 10 on a Dual Boot Windows/Ubuntu system

Do not worry about the start issue on an extended partition. You do not write into the extended partition, only the logical partitions inside the extended.
That warning is standard on old MBR...
  22. Re: Upgrading windows 7 to windows 10 on a Dual Boot Windows/Ubuntu system

You back up just a drive like sda.
If you look at text file it should show all your partitions.

    -d is the dump command
see example uses full --dump rather than -d as short name
    man sfdisk
  23. Re: Upgrading windows 7 to windows 10 on a Dual Boot Windows/Ubuntu system

All BIOS/MBR versions of Windows in recent history have ignored Linux logical partitions when it rewrites the partition table.
Data is still there all that is needed is to restore the Linux...
  24. Re: New Seperate M.2 SSD for Windows 10 Pro install Help

If UEFI update did not work was it because it reset everything to default?
I have multiple settings in my Asus motherboard that I have to redo on every UEFI update.
  25. Re: New Seperate M.2 SSD for Windows 10 Pro install Help

Some other Asrock AMD based systems. Note UEFI update my reset to default some of your UEFI settings so keep list and check after update.
