    The ground is there for safety purposes, it has no electrical function. Your laptop should work fine with no ground. Many laptop power supplies do not have a ground prong.

    CPU temperature sensors can be somewhat unreliable. If your computer is not crashing, it's probably not too hot - but isantop's suggestions are a good idea anyway.

    Your disc probably only has Windows drivers, which are pretty useless in Linux.

    I've had no problems with 3D acceleration with an ATI HD5770 - can't speak for any other ATI cards, of course.

    An SD card will probably show up as something like /dev/mmcblk*p*, where the * are numbers - if you insert the SD card into a card reader, at least.
