As the CPU I want does not have integrated graphics it will need a GPU that works out of the box with 20.04...

The HP 24fw worked out of the box.

I'v just tried using a USB stick with 12.04 on and the wifi worked. :p I notice that the kernel was 3.8.0.29(a much later one)

I have never been able to get the wireless network to work under Ubuntu though it does under Limpus Lite (dual boot)
I have read lot of similar threads but have not found one that is the same...

To upgrade start the update manager(look in Systems,Admin)

I once had the same problem after an update. It was solved by doing a cold reboot. That's totally removing all power for a minute or 2 before booting

Look in sound setting and they should be like attached picture.
