Install Ubuntu on other drive. It will install Grub automatically.
Reconnect Windows drive.

No - you're good to go as you are
I'll just throw in my thoughts here.
If you are going to dual boot and get another hard drive. I would install ubuntu on one drive and windows on the other.
I think this way you will minimise...
Only thought I had (after the reinstall) was if you can run ccsm from terminal and check unity ubuntu plugin is ticked as working.
It might just get things working again.

Same here with the post release update on the ATI / AMD driver
I'm sure this doesn't apply to everyone but if you have an ATI / AMD graphics card I suspect there is an issue with the driver.
I say this as my desktop is connected to my screen via a HDMI...

Answer to second part of question depends on what software you have installed.
I'd go with a fresh install of 12.04. If your home is on its own partition then that might save...
